I just need to vent. It is at the end of 2024 and I have been unemployed for nearly 3 years, with the exception of a small stent of 7 months in 2023. I successfully get interviews but I believe due to age discrimination I get rejected. Just this past week I had 2,2nd round interviews with 1 even emailing me back after I sent them a thank you stating “it was pleasure meeting and discussing the role. Looking forward to discussing next steps next year”. In the same day I get an automated rejection email. I emailed my contact who wrote a personal email asking if I am still being considered as I received this email too. She apologized stating I am not being considered moving forward. I am besides myself. The other interview just this past week I aced the interview, hit it off with the interviewer, had common people on our past and I still got a rejection email. I am really depressed and at a loss moving to no 2025. I just don’t know what to do ?

Your situation sounds very difficult and frustrating. Although I don’t have advice beyond continue to keep trying, I can tell you the job market is tough right now. I just hired to fill a position that we had over 150 applicants for. We gave five second round interviews. And each of those five were great candidates and would have been a great hire. But we had to choose one. It’s not easy being turned down especially when you would have been a great fit but take some solace in the fact that you are getting second round interviews and great feedback. Wishing you the best of luck.

Age descrimination is very real and in a tough market like this one, employers have a long list to choose from and often very young and older candidates are passed over unfortunately.

    Hang in there.

Sorry you are going through this. Start thinking about what companies get with you that a less experienced employee would not have. Really focus on that skill/experience to differentiate yourself & keep chipping away at those interviews! Most people can’t land interviews so you are already ahead of the game. You got this !

Maybe it's because you write things like "people on our past". Maybe it's time to start your own business.

IMO, it's okay to acknowledge knowing same people, leave it at that, I hear too often that people go on and on about those connections. Yes, I also know Adam, I've (not) worked much with them but our paths in business have crossed, or Adam's kids are the same age as mine and play ball together. Don't make it sound like you're best buddies, you won't know the interviewers experience even if they say nice things. From your snapshot that is a concern. Unless they go, hey ran into Adam, he mentioned you would be a great fit and to interview you, if not, steer clear politely. Age discrimination? not enough to comment.

Ask the previous recruiter for feedback. Also, get on zoom with a friend and do a mock interview. It helps when we have someone else watching us that can offer honest feedback. It may simply come down to your skill set, or the method by which we interview. I didn’t get a job years ago as I didn’t prepare for a behavioral based interview. Years later the manager said she should have hired me. We work at the same college different departments. Ultimately they went with a known resource as I asked for feedback. Hope that helps some.
