Years ago I worked in a department where there was an older woman who was an admin everyone thought was crazy. Turns out she was actually pretty smart. I came in as a possible replacement for another admin. She gave me the skinny on my boss (which didn’t surprise me).

She also told me how there were admin lunches where they discussed various issues. When they would ask her she’d just say “I’m good thanks.”

That advice is the some of the best that I’ve heard.

Agree. One of my bosses who was a great mentor gave me some excellent advice: "Know your audience." She was astute and recognized there were people in every workplace that could not be trusted or worthy of being 'in the know' . Be very cautious in anything you share at work.

We've probably all had a coworker at some point that we befriended but they burned us in the end.

Yes, she is smart. She knows that you cut out the baloney by simply minding your own business and staying in your respective lane.

Good grief - sounds like it could be me.

Decades at the same job, and seeing the organizational and personality dysfunction in a job I actually enjoy, I have very few close confidants on the job. I know who respects my tenure, and who is offended by it. Management knows I know my stuff, respects my opinions, and when I tell them "we may have a problem with this one" they realize I'm speaking truth. Good for you - keep your head down, don't get drawn into the drama, and you will survive.
