Saw a post today on LinkedIn stating it's a waste of time to apply for jobs these days. That was so disheartening as I need a job. I've been sending out resumes, customizing per application and trying to make connections but I'm not hearing back from people. During a previous job search, I made new connections and they passed along my resume, Now I hear, add your resume to the candidate profile as that's what the company requires. Does anyone know how to make connections as I feel that I've hit a dry well? I have a lot of connections on LinkedIn but not the right ones for job searching. Am I really wasting time applying to job listings and what else can I do?

Keep track of all you are doing to find a job. Then WHEN you get that job, post on LinkedIn, as a response to that post and say it's NOT a waste of time applying as it PAID off! Be the person to share how you did it. Pave the path for others. A tip is to do a little detective work. Not only just apply, but look at the company and find the HR folks, recruiters, or someone who is currently there and can give you an inside track. Also, I have mentioned before to many out here looking in the corporate world to consider higher ed. It's a lot safer here than out there. Think different than others and do the opposite. Don't just apply, try to reach out and follow up with a contact there.

I know how you feel, but agree with the other comment here about keeping track of all you did to land your new gig and sharing how you did it.

I, too am feeling a bit discouraged in the job hunt, so while I'm looking, I'm also trying to set up my own company to market myself to smaller companies as a high-touch executive/personal assistant, concierge and event manager. I feel that this may be the only way to get the work-life balance that I've been seeking in my (for the moment) fruitless job hunt.
