Stuck between 2 job offers with the job I prefer being the lower offer.

So for the past 2 weeks, I’ve been interviewing with 2 potential employers. I received an offer for one position that is closer but requires more in office time. The 2nd offer has been moreso verbal until we come to a mutual agreement. The 2nd job is more in the field that I want to be in also. I do feel as though I’m being low balled with the 2nd job and as much as I want to be in the field so transferring or landing future opportunities, is a bit easier, I don’t want to just take the offer for that alone because at the end of the day, I do have a family to support.

Seems to me until you have the 2nd offer in writing, then it's not solid yet.

With that in mind, you really only have one offer to go off on, and it is understandable to consider your family's financial needs in this situation.

So what's the plan here? I have a few follow up questions for you to consider so you can get unstuck:

Is your first offer place more in alignment with your financial needs? Even if it is, I hope you negotiate higher. And keep in mind, it isn't always about the money, are there other things you can negotiate here, stocks, flexible schedule, etc.

How soon do you need to tell your first offer place your decision?

Have you told your second offer place about your first offer place? If not, why not?

What's stopping the 2nd offer place from putting your offer in writing? That's a bit concerning that everything has been verbal so far. I hope you get something in writing soon. And although you prefer this place, you should still negotiate for higher rate, or at the very least, express your interest in the role but say something along the lines of wanting the company to meet you "X dollar amount."

    Good luck to you!

Get a firm written offer from the 2nd position that you can live with otherwise pass.

I took a low-balled offer in my last job and did manage to pull it up, and I was promoted a couple of times (was there 8 years).
How low is it? Can you use the other offer as a negotiating point? You mention a family, so are the benefits and work/life better even though you may bring home fewer dollars? Pay attention to the commute because that adds up, especially if you have a gas-guzzling car. Make a list of both pros and cons for both jobs, weigh them if you have to, and like others said. follow your gut.

Take the job you prefer over money. I took a job with pretty good pay but the work environment was so toxic I couldn’t take it anymore. I left for a lower paying job but hours are more flexible and it’s more fitting for me. I actually enjoy going to work now and I use to cry on my way to work.

Go with the 1st job. The 2nd one sounds iffy - "moreso verbal?". Don't make the in office issue a deal breaker, especially since it's closer/ a shorter commute. Last but not least, there may end up being aspects of the 1st job that lead to growth for you. Good luck with whatever you decide!
