    I have always heard that one way to be a good listener it to repeat back to the person what they are saying, so that they feel heard and it shows you are understanding that they are saying.... Not repeat as in "verbatim" but when they stop talking you respond with something like "so, what you are saying is..." and then kind of summarize what you took away from the conversation. Then you can add any advice or answers (if they were requested in the conversation). This also helps with clarity. It give them a chance to correct something you may have misunderstood.
