On my resume, is a phone number necessary?

My email and Linkedin contact information is on my resume. Is my phone number needed? Do recruiters call or would they hesitate to contact me without a phone number? It's been a while since updating my resume and I've seen examples with and without a phone number to contact. What's recommended?

I have hired a lot of people - I usually call to set up interviews.

Yes, always include your phone number as one never knows if you will get a call and email. Former recruiter, I always called first then emailed to follow up.

Best is to get a forwarding number like google voice.

Use that for resumes only and then you can screen inbound calls should they come randomly at inopportune times. Be sure that your outbound message has your name attached and some sort of information about how you can get back to them.

YES! Please have a phone number on your resume. How am I going to call you for our interview if I don't have a phone number. And don't forget all the subsequent people you will hopefully be interviewing with.

Also, please make sure your voicemail is set up and not full.

You are going to set up the interview by email and include, “What is the best phone number to reach you?” in that email. Giving you my phone number for a scheduled interview is not the same as putting it out there for anyone.

I already do include in my emails a request for the best phone number to contact candidates. I also highlight the request. Approximately only 20 to 25% of the people I request that information from actually provide it.

And for the hiring managers and hiring team members coming after me, they need that number and typically find it on the resume.

I sincerely hope you email INSTEAD of calling.

Why, sincerely, do you hope that?

yes please ! Plus when I was job hunting a few years ago , only shady companies contacted by text and email. Now some will send and email asking for a phone interview. I think I’d be annoyed if I had to reach out for your phone number.

Many legit companies email you to set up a call. Phone calls can be spam too.

Plus some recruiters in tech have such a strong accent that I cannot understand them anyway, even when their firm is legit, so email is better.

Am seconding what's already been said about a second phone number. I've gotten calls and texts from recruiters using my resume number which led to real interviews inside real buildings. I got an uptick in spam as well but that's only part of the traffic.

    Just type "ON REQUEST"

You are using your resume to apply for jobs, yes? I would include your phone number on the resume.

It's 2024!Why are people setting up interviews with a phone call instead of email?

It's also election season in the US, which means a much higher percent of phone calls are spam.
