As far as I know, on the legal side, international companies not only need to comply with their own laws and regulations, but also abide by the rules in other countries where they have business. Nobody wants trouble.

On the cost side, the entire hiring and onboard processes will be very costly to wait for background checks and not having the new hire.

Does that help? I’m sure there are people in the area who could give you more information.

International background checks can be very surface or very detailed, ex: do they check for sex offenders from the other country, what level of education are you sharing and is it able to be confirmed, they can and will go through the government equivalent of checking on if they're on a no fly list, etc. It all depends on how that specific company views and invests in their background check process.

They usually verify the details on your job application. Companies you worked for (start dates and end dates), education (type of degree, year you graduated, and date), criminal record, and in the US sometimes a credit report to see your credit worthiness. You have to agree to the check and you can opt to get a copy of what they verified because if something comes back incorrect you have a chance to fix it etc. You don't have to agree to it but I'm sure if you do not your application will no longer be considered because they will suspect that something on your application is not true.

We would follow local to where the employee is being hired. Example, if it's a US-based hire, it would background screen and pre-employment drug screen and whatever other standards are established by the specific company.
