That doesn't relate to me at all, as it's the reason I am well ahead than most of my peers. But I do believe it as some people don't reply to emails till days later. I reply within 24 hours (in my old banking days, it's called the sundown rule). I'm curious what others have heard or experienced too. Great statement to ponder.

Well...I have ADHD so results may vary. There are days where I can fit a whole week's worth of work into 3 hours. There are days I'm going going going all day long. Some days I have feel like I have zero productivity. On the plus side, I'm not an hourly employee.

depends, you also need to take care of your mental and physical wellbeing and take a couple of breaks besides lunch at work for your own good.

I hired and fired that person.

I would check your sources on that one if you can remember where you read that, because that number sounds impossible to support.

Who is an average workers? Does that include hospital and agriculture workers? What about teachers and construction workers?

Seems like a broad statement to encompass all workers into the average and say we workers as a collective are productive 3 hours a day.

That being said, there are days when I'm not productive at all :-)

    Side note:

I did a quick google search and found a couple of non-scientific studies that say office workers self-reported that they consider themselves "productive" an average of 2 hours and 53 minutes. One of these non-scientific studies was a firm in the UK that provides coupons and discount codes which I'm sure ran this survey (or perhaps didn't even do anything just made up numbers) to support a compaign they were running.

Anyway, I'm sure you weren't asking for someone to debunk your statement but I couldn't let it go :)

I work for a non-profit grantee of a county agency. And from what I've seen, there have been workers kept on that maybe do 30 minutes of effective work per day. They're either on break, getting a drink of water, going to the bathroom(where they spend at least 40 minutes on their phone), or on their 1 hour lunch. Are coming at 12 or leaving at 12 to use up their comp time. It amazes me they've made to retirement. And their not even civil service.

I’m curious about this too but I’m sure this probably only applies to knowledge workers. 4 hours is my sweet spot, I work in digital marketing and I’m simply not wired to do math all day lol. The remaining 2-4 hours I use for lower lift tasks like emails, project management, meetings, etc.

It depends on what kind of job one is doing. A job that requires some physical interaction and eye coordination will have less chance for the individual to stop working then an assignment office job that can be done easily and the rest of the day is merely busy work hours and not constant new assignments. The reference was probably written by someone who measures productivity by end results not time spent producing the results. My personal philosophy for working is get all the important tasks done first no matter how distasteful or interrupted I am getting them done and if I finish then I can relax and prepare for the next day.

Interesting - I would say at least in my experience - it depends on the pay scale. I personally can't relate to only being productive 3 hours out of an 8 hour shift and take 1.5 to 2 hour personal lunches (not business related) - that is pure non-sense and should not be tolerated in my opinion. The pay scale is directly in relation to the productive part of the day - again, only in my experience. I have two supervisors that put in roughly 3 hours a day - but report working 8-10 hours a day. Granted they may attend a meeting or two I'm not aware of - but I do make appointments and schedule appointments so am pretty on top of their daily schedules and whereabouts for work connectivity purposes. It occasionally makes the bottom line staff say - what the heck, so-and-so works 3 hours a day and disappears and gets away with it, why should I put in a full 8 hour day. Unfortunately in this circumstance we completely were aware that this supervisor was having an affair on duty and not hiding the fact that his vehicle was at her house while he was on duty "working" - so we've been burned in the past so that is probably what creates the non-trust. It was reported to HR by an employee or two that knew this was going on and HR said it wasn't their business to monitor the supervisors day , even given proof that his vehicle was at this woman's house for hours while he was reporting as on duty - thus causing the employees to lose trust and care less about performing. This has killed morale and trust and unfortunately the next leader hasn't been any more available as a leader, he works 3 hours and disappears the remainder of the day, knowing full well we went through this with the previous supervisor. When asked by other people where he is I just simply say he is out on business - unfortunately once again I'm being told he is not where he says he is going - it's a lot to handle as this person's admin who is in a trusted position and wants just to be honest - but it's been a horrible experience in trust and lack of leadership. Me, I'm productive - I want to keep busy, I was raised to give 110% to your employer - do I goof off occasionally - of course on a rare beautiful sunny day I'll take a walk around the building or get fresh air for a whlle, I'm human, not a robot, but rarely - I feel good about myself being busy and accomplishing tasks and leaving with a clean slate at night ready to embrace the next day - it keeps me sane - as for the leadership - it's horrible, was horrible and is again, he's moving on in the next few months, praying for a real leader to be hired - but not holding my breath. I do me - productivity is my happy place - I can only control what I do - unfortunately these people make three times what I make - but - I have to sleep at night and keeping busy all day gives me that pleasure.

I was blessed to have had fabulous supervisors prior to this current job - they put in their fair share and were excellent leaders - did they goof off an hour or two - probably but they were excellent leaders doing their job so taking a breather to chat with a friend or leave early once in a while - they deserved it and I truly respect and appreciated their leadership.

Wishing you all a wonderful day - now - back to being productive!

The wayI’ve been feeling about work since 2022, I haven’t done more than 4 hours of work a day in 3 years even though I am a full time employee. My strength is not working hours and hours each day. I am not a machine. Once I started working corporate jobs, I hated the hours and the environment. I trying to pivot my career now so I will be doing something that aligns with my strengths.
