If you already have some machine learning (ML) skills and are looking for a real-world project to build your portfolio, here are a few ideas:

-- Partner with local organizations: Reach out to your local municipality, nonprofits, or charities to see if they have data you could work with. Be upfront—let them know you're looking for a meaningful ML project and would love to help while also gaining experience. If they have large datasets or repetitive tasks, you might be able to create something valuable for them.

-- Explore open-source datasets: Sites like Hugging Face offer great ML datasets and examples of real projects. Browsing what others have done can give you both inspiration and solid starting points.

--Help an early-stage startup: Look for pre-seed or early-stage startups who need help with data or ML but don’t have the budget for full-time talent. Offer your services for free or at a low cost to gain experience.

Tip: Search for Slack groups or Discord communities for startup founders. Join, introduce yourself, and share what kind of project you’re looking to work on.
(Ping me if you’d like help finding communities or early-stage startups to approach!)

-- Leverage your school network: If you're still in school, check out your university’s entrepreneurship clubs or incubators. Students in other disciplines may be forming teams and could benefit from someone with ML skills.

If you're still building up your ML skill set and want low-cost options:

-- Check your public library (if you’re in the US*). Many libraries offer free access to Udemy, where you’ll find great ML and data science courses—without the usual $10–$100+ price tag. If you are not in the US, check your public library (if available) as they may have other learning options.

-- YouTube has thousands of free tutorials, from beginner to advanced. If one doesn’t suit your level, you’ll easily find others that do.

-- Coursera is another strong option. You can audit many courses for free (you just won’t get the certificate unless you pay). Their monthly subscription unlocks certificates and structured learning paths if you want a deeper dive.

Whether you're upskilling or looking for a portfolio project, keep it real-world, measurable, and relevant to your goals. That’s what will stand out to hiring managers.

Good luck! Let me know if you want help refining your project idea.

Do you have ML skills/training and you are looking for a real-world project? If yes, ping me on LinkedIn (link in my bio) and we can chat. I might have an opportunity for you. It's for an pre-funding/pre-revenue startup so it would be a equity stake for you (no cash) but I don't think it's a huge project so it might be something you want. Anyway, ping me
