Cost of living still high - creative saving tips?

Cost of living still high - creative saving tips?

Everything still feels expensive around Berlin. Trying all the usual tricks (budgeting, cutting back).

Anyone doing anything slightly unconventional that helps? I started using cashback features more aggressively, even trying the referral program on my favorite exchange P2Pchange.is with tiny amounts. Probably pennies, but feels proactive!

What small hacks work for you?

Look for sales on things you'll need in the next couple of weeks and buy now if you can. Or if it makes sense, see if you can split something (toilet paper, rice) with a friend or nearby family to save.

It’s not exactly unconventional, but we’ve found a few strategies that really help. We eat two vegetarian meals a week, and when we do use meat, we slice it very thin—a tip from a friend who lived in South Korea. It stretches the meat much further.

We also save veggie scraps to make homemade stock and even make our own laundry detergent when money’s tight. Picking up part-time jobs with useful perks—like store discounts or remote work—has been a big help too.

If you have garden space, growing and selling produce can bring in extra cash. My son makes and sells hats through referrals, and one of my employees sells homemade salsa. Little side hustles that really add up.

You don't need fancy fabric softener. Use a Downy Ball and instead of filling it with fabric softener use white vinegar. Trust me your clothes won't smell like vinegar once the rinse is done.

Also I pre-game it when going out for drinks. I will have one in the parking lot before going in.

Don't grocery shop while you're hungry.

I thrift almost everything. Home goods, clothes, shoes, etc.

If I am going out shopping I make a fancy coffee at home and take it with me so I am not tempted to get Starbucks or something similar.

Thrifting can be pretty lucrative if you find things you can resell for profit. (Furniture is especially great if you have the skills to restore/refinish it!)

Yeah I feel that, Berlin's been wild lately with prices. I’ve been stalking discount bins like it’s a sport lol. One weird thing that helped—contacting ginnys customer service to ask about promo cycles. Got a heads-up on when they usually drop deals. Not game-changing, but hey, lil wins stack up. Also been flipping free samples. Sounds dumb but it adds up.
