Hi HR professionals,

Hi HR professionals,

I’m currently reviewing HR practices for an assessment and would appreciate your insights.

In your experience, what are the most effective strategies to improve employee retention and engagement in technical or service-based roles (e.g. mechanics or technicians)?

I’m particularly interested in recruitment approaches, performance feedback methods, and learning & development strategies that have worked well.

Thank you in advance!

In my 20 years or so of working in technical roles, the biggest factor in employee retention is the proper training, vetting, and supervision of management personnel. Technical roles have notoriously poorly trained and ineffective managers. Most companies simply promote technical experts and hope for the best. The far better approach is an active training program for managers.

Training programs should cover employment law and that sort of thing. Make sure you do 360 feedback HR reviews. And make sure beyond a measure of doubt that your performance appraisal system CANNOT be gamed or manipulated by unscrupulous and unethical managers. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, always remember you get what you reward.
