Two rules of thumb. If it's only been a couple of months, and within the same year, some folks leave it off and explain in the interview as appropriate. If it's been longer and into a new year, be honest. In your case, I'd say "Family Caregiver." List dates, your skills, projects, accomplishments. If you have, you could also add " Consultant" for the line of work you're in. You may also want to consider becoming a consultant.
Not hearing from anyone is par for the course these days. You're in good company. Keep plugging away. Focus on networking and talking with folks (getting references, and suggestions). If you're a VP, I'm sure there are a couple of headhunters interested in working with you. This quarter, and close to the election, some companies are hiring fast and some are holding off. FWIW, if you have any higher degrees or certificates, you could also consider contacting your alumni liaisons. Some folks take care of their alumni from graduation to grave. Some just for a few years.
Good luck!
