Client Conversation Takeaways: Turning Dense Experience into a Clear Story
This week, I met with a senior technical leader who felt stuck. Brilliant work, heavy on acronyms, light on outcomes. Recruiters were not biting. Interviews felt flat.
We spent 45 minutes reframing the narrative. Here is what worked.
The pivot
We pulled three business themes from a long list of projects: risk reduction, team leadership, and cross-functional impact.
Swapped jargon for plain results.
Lined up six proof points with numbers and scope.
Tightened the headline and About so the value shows up in the first 5 seconds.
The before and after
Before: “Owned X, Y, Z systems across multiple environments.”
After: “Cut incident response time by 42% across 12 business units by simplifying playbooks and training 30+ engineers.”
Why this lands
Clarity beats complexity.
Outcomes travel farther than tools.
Specific numbers create instant credibility.
Try this 20-minute exercise
? List three business problems you solve.
?Under each, write two results with a number, scope, and who benefited.
?Read it out loud, and if it sounds like a story, you are close. If it sounds like a manual, keep editing.
If you want me to pressure-test your theme and two proof points, drop “story” in the comments or DM me. I will share a quick starter template you can use right away.
