Insights on working for a small marketing agency

I am interviewing for a full time senior Program Manager role in a small agency that caters to predominantly Google and other tech companies. Beyond the pay range (which seemed fair for the Bay Area), what would be the pros and cons of joining an agency vs client side? I have never worked on the agency side but have worked with them externally in my previous roles. I am a bit concerned about room for growth in a small agency. Appreciate any insight from anyone who have agency experience. Thanks.

Room for growth can be a problem in small agencies unless there is a lot of turnover. Then, if there is a lot of turnover, you have to ask yourself, "Why?" Smaller companies tend to have more nepotism, so what sort of relationships exist there? Is it family-owned? Did they all graduate from the same college? Is everybody there about the same age (within ten years, for example)? How diverse is the workforce? These environments have limited mobility for "outsiders." Check Glassdoor and other rating sites to see current (or former) employees' thoughts.

Glassdoor reviews seems great! One comment said "it's where Creatives retire". Not sure how to interpret that. Thanks for these great insights. Will surely watch out for those.

IMO, that would indicate that if you're the creative type [whatever that means], you are golden and revered.

I had 5 interviews and a final offer with an agency exactly like you are describing, and in the end, I went with my other offer. Simply because of Glassdoor/Indeed reviews and the overall vibe I received with some of the interviewers. Hindsight, maybe it would have been amazing, and wonderful experience, but those reviews…..?
