After 5+ months of unemployment, I finally landed a role. I’m grateful and excited, but nervous.

In the past 4.5 years I’ve been 100% remote. This role is hybrid 3-in and 2-home. What are some routines you have incorporated in your life to make your in office days easier? Whats your favorite lunch box brand? Heels or flats first day?

Lol I feel like I’m going to my first day of school, excited but scared.

First, breathe. You wowed them at the interview, so you've got this. Have you been given a dress code? If not, conform to what the interviewers wore when you interviewed. For your first day, make sure whatever you wear meets the code and is as comfortable as possible. If you are packing a lunch, use an insulated bag unless you are sure they have a refrigerator you can use. Congratulations, and keep us posted.

    Thank you!! Will do!

    How exciting! Congratulations.

Here's how I organize and plan my week. I have done this routine more or less for 30 years. Key to it is keep things simple abd efficient.

For my in office days I food prep on Sundays after an early a.m. trip to the farmers market and grocery stores.

I wash my veggies and fruit, grill my protein and section out my other items. I make sure my coffee bean canister is full, I have my creamers, etc handy. I portion out my supplements in my weekly container and stock the fridge with teas, water etc.

I do my laundry and section out my wardrobe so I have my outfits planned and ready to reach for. I don't like to have to decide on things the day of........I pack my pilates bag and make sure I have all my lotions and potions topped off. Finally, I check my calendar on my phone to make sure I know what's coming up and schedule selfcare etc.

Finally, I gas up my car, visit the car wash and do any last minute errands. I'm usually done by noon and relax the rest of the Sunday.

I do the same, minus the coffee. And I work out 30-60 min first thing in the morning. Drink my Shakeology protein shake while I get myself pretty.

Little frig at work holds my lunch, & I keep healthy snacks at work as well.

Congrats and enjoy the new job!!

I was thinking about a little fridge to smuggle in!

This sounds wonderful but a bit of a dream for moms with little kids! But if you can do it, preparation is definitely the way to go. I feel like I’m just holding on to the edge of the magic carpet most days…

Only way I kept myself sane and on track with 2 kids 2 years apart. I was that working mom with the giant calendar on the utility room wall and prepped 3 meals per day every day since they were in every sport, club and activity known to man. Organization and planning was my sanity.

Now at 69, I watched kids and now grand kid do the same method. Makes me laugh in camaraderie.

Wow thanks so much! Okay sounds like my Sundays are now devoted to prep and church! Thanks so much!

Congrats, flats, not enough to be nervous and falling from heels on first day. Eat light. No help with lunch here, sorry.

Could you imagine! Ugh I would be unemployed once again because who can be the girl who fell on her first day ??

  11. Francilla V Lapena

Yay, Congratulations to you!! I would buy a lot of grab and go lunches; My go to place is Trader Joe's, buy a salad and then maybe a can of tuna or salmon, get protein in those salads! Enjoy and have photos around you that make you happy. Omgosh, I'd say heels, or a cute pair of flat type ballerina shoes (I bought a cute Steve Madden pair and I absolutely love them, comfy, too!).

Please don’t take canned fish to an office environment. Save those type of lunches for your home days!

  13. Anonymous

Yes! To get that rep on my first day would be horrid ?

  14. Anonymous

Thank you! Ahh I love TJ’s, yes I’ll meal prep, and save the yummy tuna for wfh days! Thank you!

Congratulations! It's normal to be nervous but as others mentioned, you've already impressed them. Be proud of yourself, excited for the opportunity and getting to know your colleagues. Heels can give you a lift or extra confidence but have flats in your bag to slide into after work. If you're located in an area with a lot of food choices, don't bring your lunch the first day. You may be taken out for lunch and / or give yourself a lunch out to get to know your new area or to leave the office for a break. You got this, time to shine!

Yes exactly heels give you that extra “je ne sais quoi” but like other added I’ll probably have to walk around and meet people and quickly become tired of them. So we’ll save the heels or bring them along and scope the scenery ?. Thankfully before I went fully remote I worked in the same business park so I’m familiar. Thanks again!!

I was in the same situation. I prepared the night before. I didn't pack a lunch because I wasn't sure of the setup but bought lunch in the cafeteria. Next day I packed a lunch. I wore flats, but carried my heels. Which was a good thing as I had to walk up stairs to get to the second floor and my cubicle. I wore a dress with tights (it was November) and a sweater jacket. Once I saw what others were wearing I adjusted going forward. I've been there for 10 months and still as excited as the first day. I have no doubt you will do great and congratulations.

Thanks so much. Yes I’m hunting for flats now but I’ll bring both but may just save heels for the next week!

  23. Stacey Belser

I was remote for several years and went to the same hybrid schedule. I keep similar morning routines no matter where I am working. On my work from home days, I do my longer workouts because I am saving commute times. Otherwise I still get up at the same time so its not so hard when I have to get up for the office the next day.

When it comes to shoes...FLATS!! You will likely be walking around and being introduced to new people. Flats will still look nice and your feet won't hate you! Good luck! :)

  24. Anonymous

Haha thank you! I was thinking the same. OrangeTheory on days where I don’t have to commute or just evening workouts on days that I do. And yes, I’m searching for cute flats now… I’ll save the heels for week 2. Lol

    Thank you!! *goes shopping*

Congrats on landing a new position! I am also hybrid, 3 days in, 2 days remote. We went hybrid after COVID, so I had to reacquaint myself with being in an office and bringing lunch, etc. Always wear flats your first week. This way, you are more comfortable if they are taking you around to meet others. You may not be sitting as much that first week. I also bring my lunch but we have a fridge so I store it there. You will get used to it. I really struggled going back in after COVID and we had to wait 6 months to do any type of remote again. When I came out of a job that was completely remote to an office 5 days a week, I learned to wear comfy shoes in, and brought other work shoes for the day. We are on campus so it's a lot of walking. I plan my lunches every week so that even when I'm working remote, I have lunch in the fridge. A small insulated lunch bag with an ice pack is super helpful. I also keep snacks in my drawer, like nuts, etc. Good luck in your new role you will do great!

  27. Lena Santillan

Congratulations! I've been working remotely for the past 4 years and I'm dying for some human interaction and hybrid is ideal. Yeah it can be like going back to school. I would wear flats or definitely comfortable shoes for the first day.

Same everyone keeps looking at me like I’m crazy. Although I am a bit nervous because others can be a distraction. But I kind of miss knowing my coworkers. Secretly of course.

  29. Cautious

Congratulations on the new job! I have a question for you: what about your commute. I am completely remote and have been for four years. I may be considered for a new role at a different universit, it would be hybrid but I dread commuting. How will you deal with that aspect of your new job?

  30. Anonymous

Before I went remote I actually used to work in the same business community so I’m very familiar with the route and the various ways to get there at peak traffic time. Now I cannot say I’m excited to do this trek but I am familiar with it.

  31. Ida Schaeffer

I would say flats the first day as you be doing a lot walking being shown around. Keep a sweater at your desk as it might get cold. I’d bring in a fidget toy or two to keep at your desk. I find it helps to keep me focused while working.
