I am in a dilemma about my next career step. (Warning: a long post)

I have been working in my field for 7 years now and from the beginning I wasn't feeling comfortable in my role. I got traumatised already during the education and was wondering if this profession is really going to make me happy. In my first workplace I experienced discrimination and misgony.

Due to the fact that I have studied this discipline that is quite specific, I didn't see the the way to change career without going back to school (which I really couldn't do after graduation because of student depts). So I went on working in that sector.

I have been laid off last year due to a conflict with my boss (the reason: I have been experiencing bossing for the 3rd time in these 7 years). Since then I have been trying to find a new position in a different sector but a lateral entry seems to be impossible without further diploma. In my last workplace I also realised that I am independent, initiative taking and very creative at work. Knowing this I am wondering if I should continue the job search or rather beginn to make a plan regarding self-employment. Besides, I have difficulties imagine working for another boss who would treat me badly.

So, any of you who have had similar experiences? Would a self-employment be the solution? Thanks.

Since you are independent, initiative taking and very creative perhaps your self-employment idea is perfect if your area of expertise warrants those attributes.

There will always be bad bosses in every single sector and every single company. The secret for sucess in all areas of life (not just your career) is to shore up your personal guidance and have a very strong compass in life so you navigate those individuals and get where you want to go. You learn the skills to plot your path of least resistance and strength of vision beyond the people who appear in your life that want to thwart your effort. It takes vision, clarity and reading situations with amazing skill. Don't focus on the people around you and their behavior that take you against the current. There is usually a "best path forward" to get you where you're going. Move like a chess piece and create plans and scenarios that benefit your plan.

I'm not sure what this meant "I have been experiencing bossing for the 3rd time in these 7 years)." I do not know what this means. We all report to someone. Also, one doesn't get laid off because of conflicts, you get terminated. Or if there was a reduction in force (RIF), you may have been selected because you do not get along with your boss. I'm not sure if you are in the U.S. but we all have had bad bosses and if you are resistant to following rules, or being pleasant, you will continually find yourself unemployed . I had a hard time discerning your question but it sounds like you do not want to work for anyone but yourself. If you want to own your own company, you will have to deal with difficult clients. I highly suggest you take courses in self management, and working with difficult people. Also, take the Myers Briggs or other personality tests and learn more about yourself. You could also take the Birkman and learn more about how you work, and respond to others and how they respond to you and how to work better together. There will always be people you work for, with and serve, that will treat you unkindly. Hope you are able to find a new role where you enjoy the people better. And just an FYI, in the U.S. we do not use the term "bossing". Good luck!

I also fixated on this statement! To the OP: switch fields, get another degree, whatever…you’ll always report up to someone unless you start your own business.

You’ve complained about three supervisors “bossing” you?! This is the essence of their leadership role! The common denominator is you.

Despite your experience & education, it seems like you run into problems with every single employer. Please use this opportunity as an inflection point to better understand how you will approach your next job differently. Or to several people’s points, if you simply can’t tolerate the structure of any employer you work with, start your own business b

Excellent reply! Not sure what bossing means either but we are all bossed by our bosses. :-)

I think it's a good idea to use your intelligence, your hard work and your education /degree- and look for new work, in new field. You sound intelligent and hard working, but this is not a good fit for you. Many industries will hire someone with a very different education, train you, and you can grow in an entirely new field of work. You might take a pay cut, but you will be much happier. It sounds as if English is not your first language, but you have mastered it very very well. I wish you much success. You are not in a good place, Start looking and be open to something very new!
