Are Technical Aptitude Assessments for non-technical roles now required for applications?

Hi everyone. I received a first-round job interview invitation, and the interviewer is demanding a Technical Aptitude Assessment for a non-technical role (education project manager). If one is not provided, then the interview will be rescinded. Also, I have to pay $200 for this assessment separately. Is this normal for the hiring process nowadays for non-technical project manager roles? I've never heard of this. The company also doesn't have great reviews. The whole thing gives me pause. This is the first interview I've received after hundreds of applications over the past year. I'm quite torn. Thank you!

    They are selling the tests

Never pay to go to work. They pay you for your time, not the other way around.

You should NOT have to pay for an assessment that allegedly gets you an interview. This has the markings of "scam" all over it. It wouldn't surprise me at all if someone pays $200 for the test, they will allegedly fail it but be able to take a course for much more money to pass it, even though it is not an official test and will never lead to employment. AVOID!

That sounds like a potential scam.

If you're in the US, depending on where you live, it could be illegal for you to have to pay money to be considered for a position.

Candidates should never have to pay for background checks, etc. This would be a hard no for me.

Not a real job. Just a phishing expedition to obtain your personal information and $200.

I would never pay for an assessment for an interview and have never heard of such a thing, and I have applied for lots of (non-technical) jobs in a range of industries over the last five years.

Never pay for anything regarding employment applications! This does not sound good. Keep interviewing and find a employer that will know how to ask the right questions about your experience and hire you based upon that. Not knowing what field you are in perhaps seek out employment agencies and go visit them in person if possible so that they can see you and know your skills and professionalism when they meet you. Good luck.
