Hi there,
Profound question! Most struggle with this question as we go through life.
I am of the belief that we all know what that thing is. The challenge is that it does not mean that there is a specific career but that it is a specific passion or theme behind what fulfills us. This means that it could be several different careers but could all possibly tie to your passion.
Here are some prompting questions:
What are the things I enjoy doing?
What things do I do naturally?
What do others come to me for help with?
My story, I was told I was a Life/Career Coach my whole life. From a kid studying people and attempting to read psychology books and asking questions, to high school I recall my family and friends coming to me for help on their resumes, even in a totally different career in finance I still found myself mentoring and in some cases managing the programs in career development for interns and recent grads. I basically couldn't and haven't been able to help myself throughout my life in helping people maneuver their career development, questions and challenges.
So, my advice is to take the pressure off finding this one specific career and focus in on the underlying theme of what fulfills you! Then take a look at the possible careers (plural) that you would be interested in and maybe even fit within your desired lifestyle, or specific clients/customers you want to help, or even financial needs, could all be part of your assessment.
Hope this helps.
