can you get a paid intern role? have you tried linkedin or flex?

  2. Bethel Feyissa

Thank you so much for the suggestion! I’ve been actively exploring options, and I’ll definitely take a closer look at paid internships through LinkedIn and FlexJobs. I’m open to both paid and unpaid opportunities at this stage, as gaining hands-on experience is my top priority. I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. I'll keep pushing forward and expanding my search. Thanks again for the helpful advice!

Cybersecurity itself is not an entry level position in most companies. You need to pay your dues in IT security starting more towards the bottom and show/demonstrate skills, initiative, critical thinking, teamwork, and communications. Then they will recognize the person who presents the inquisitiveness and critical thinking skills they are looking for to develop upwards into cybersecurity.

Start by looking at people in IT Security what has been their path to get to a role in cybersecurity. Reach out to network with someone in Cybersecurity and see what they have to say - find a mentor who can provide you guidance in your career path.

There are a lot of tools being used in cybersecurity - so say you know or have studied them is one thing, but understanding and thinking critically and reacting fast in a potential hacking or security incident is another thing.

    Wishing you luck

Thank you so much for this detailed and realistic perspective. I truly appreciate it. I understand now that cybersecurity roles often require a solid foundation in IT and the ability to demonstrate not just technical knowledge, but also critical thinking, adaptability, and strong communication skills. I’m actively working on building that foundation and developing those qualities. I’ll take your advice and start connecting with professionals in the field to learn more about their paths and possibly find a mentor who can help guide me. Your encouragement means a lot, and I’m committed to putting in the work and staying curious. Thanks again for your insight and well wishes!

Cybersecurity is an incredibly competitive field! Most employers expect experience and multiple certifications (the specifics depend on the role). Doing an unpaid internship is a good way to get some experience. Another way is to ask your current employer if you can start doing some small tasks to assist the official cybersecurity team in the company. Ask the team members how you can help and how they got their starts.

    Good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice and encouragement! I truly appreciate the insights. I understand that cybersecurity is a highly competitive field, and I’m committed to continuing my learning and building practical experience. I’ll definitely look into internship opportunities, paid or unpaid, and I like the idea of connecting with my current employer’s cybersecurity team to contribute wherever possible. Hearing how others got their start really helps, and I’m grateful for the support as I take these next steps in my journey. Thanks again!

Contact your school's job assistance dept or your instructors. My husband mentor's seniors in the local university's cyber program. Your school will know of internships (paid and unpaid) that are available.
