I never thought an article written by a man about the struggles of women in leadership would have such a profound impact on me. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic wrote an article back in 2013 for the Harvard Business Review titled “Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders?”. I ran across this article in my Sunday morning perusal of news and information and I wish I could say this situation has improved. This article is all too relevant. In my career I have been told by male leaders that I need to be more “sociopathic”, that I care too much for my staff and for the customers. I believe that compassion and servant-style leadership is more effective. This article illustrates that science supports that belief.
Please read this article and know that we shouldn’t stop being compassionate, effective leaders simply because narcissism masked as confidence is normalized in our society. We need to support each other and help others to be better leaders by showing them the way. So keep going. Keep being your awesome selves, ladies. Someday the struggle will pay off.
