Follow up… should I let go or wait?

Follow up… should I let go or wait?

I hope everyone is doing well. I wanted to get your opinion on my recent interviews. I had two panel interviews, one on February 14th and another on February 27th. After each one, I sent a follow-up email to express my gratitude.

On March 4th, I followed up again to check on the status. They mentioned they would like my references and said it might take about a week before I hear anything back. That date has passed on March 13th, and I haven't received any updates since then. I've held off on sending another email to follow up.

What do you think about the situation at this point?

First, reach out to your references and see if any attempt was made to contact them.
If not, I would wait another week before reaching out again (ideally reach out to an HR/talent acquisition contact, not the hiring manager) and then unfortunately if you don't hear back you are likely being ghosted. As both a hiring manager and a candidate, I have sometimes had issues with approvals and had making an offer get delayed by a month or more, but I would always make sure to communicate with a candidate if that was the case since I wouldn't want to lose them.

They aren't ready or are not ready to let you know they've move forward with someone else. But I would keep in touch.

I would just send a friendly email at this point. It shows that you are proactive, which is awesome. But, more importantly it gives you back a little bit of control in the process. I did this a week or so ago and it turns out the answer was a 'no.' But, at least I knew and wasn't planning my whole life checking my email for updates. And, who knows! You might not get a 'no.'

A friendly reminder couldn't hurt. It could be a myriad of reasons. Perhaps they haven't heard back from references or are waiting for other checks to happen. It could also be that you are their second choice and haven't heard back from the initial offer.

They haven’t reached out to my reference yet. I’ve followed up them.

I have an email drafted to send to the recruiter. I’ll hit send today.

Thanks for the advice. I didn’t want to seem overbearing or pushy.

Definitely reach out you never know what could be going on internally. I recently was unemployed. I had the first interview online in October 10th then the second in person interview October 13th. I was the first candidate interviewed. I reached back out to HR two weeks post last interview. Received a response that they were still interviewing, but they'd be in touch. I got an email from the hiring manager the week before Thanksgiving asking me to come in for a third round interview the Monday post holiday. After interview they told me they would make a decision that week. They did follow through and then it was a much later start date of 1/2/24. Come to find out after I started they fired staff in my department early December so they were clearly busy. And with backgrounds check and holiday schedule it just made sense for the later start.

I would go ahead and send the follow up email. Responding to your update, I would make it clear that you've given then enough time to reach back out, and that you've reached out to your references and they have not been contacted. Be respectful of the fact that they may be busy elsewhere but also remember that you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you.

Send the email then give them another week at most - at that point it's up to you if you want to send them one more email to see if they will bite. If nothing, assume you've been ghosted. Good luck!

Have you checked with your references to see if they got calls? or emails? If they have not send this email to the company.

    Hi X,

I wanted to circle back since our last conversation of 3/4 and let you know that another company is interested as well in progessing my candidacy and checking my references. If I am not moving ahead please let me know as my preference is to not have them called too many times unless I will be getting an offer. That being said this note is not to pressure you into a decision if you are not there yet but to definitely get a status on "IF" I am still being considered.

    Thanks in advance...

    Me

PS feel free to use it word for word!

Uugghh- it’s so frustrating when they take their time with little or no consideration for yours

    good luck to you

Always followup but never depend on the role until you accept a written offer and pass your background check.

I’d check with the references and see if they’ve been contacted. If not, you might be second choice. That’s not always a bad thing, sometimes a company has to take a run at someone they can’t get before they get real and pick the right choice. (you).

    Absolutely follow up with them.
