Reflections from a Powerful Conversation with Melinda French Gates
I recently attended a live discussion with Melinda French Gates in honor of International Women’s Day. The conversation explored leadership, career growth, and creating real opportunities for women and underrepresented communities.
One of my questions was selected during the event:
✪ What are the most effective ways leaders can create sustainable opportunities for women and underrepresented professionals, beyond mentorship?
Melinda’s response:
→ Invest in women-owned and underrepresented businesses.
→ Support local leaders who reflect your values and can drive policy change.
→ Advocate for women and underserved communities.
These insights were a powerful reminder that real change requires action at multiple levels—economically, politically, and socially.
Here are other key takeaways from the event:
↓ Don’t over-plan—leave room to adapt.
↓ "If you don’t talk about yourself, no one will do it."
↓ Be flexible in your mindset.
↓ Finding a sponsor is as important as finding a mentor.
↓ Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
↓ Set boundaries—say no early rather than letting it linger.
↓ Set your own agenda.
↓ Try the thing you’re most scared to do.
↓ Trapeze strategy: Know when to hang on and when to let go.
I also submitted these questions, and I would love to hear different perspectives:
✪ As someone with extensive leadership experience, I’ve found that navigating career transitions—especially after layoffs—requires resilience and strategic positioning. What advice would you give to women leaders seeking to reestablish their career trajectory in competitive industries?
✪ In 20+ years, I’ve never had a female mentor or reported to a woman. As I navigate my next opportunity after a layoff, how can I find the right mentor to support my growth and find my next role?
This discussion was a great reminder of the importance of advocacy, adaptability, and taking charge of our own narratives. What lessons have resonated with you in your career journey? Let’s continue the conversation.
