I've been consulting

And I recently was offered a contract that might go 3 months. They specifically sought me out due to my experience level. However, the hourly is about $50 below what I initially discussed with the recruiter. He's trying to ply it down now that the role is actually "lower level" than he anticipated. It's not. I am thinking about reaching out to the person who I would report to because I don't think he's in the know about what the recruiter is doing or maybe he is. Either way, what would you do?

I would pursue other opportunities meanwhile and if they can come to a conclusion that suits you, take it. Otherwise, this disconnect could just be a symptom of deeper issues that it would be prudent to avoid.

It sounds like a big difference, but how much lower is it really? $50 an hour is a lot if your proposal was $100 per hour, but not nearly as dramatic as if the original proposal was $750 per hour. Negotiate for what the market says you are worth and the skill set you bring. If they say it is a lower-level position, you can return with, "I'm only interested in opportunities that will help showcase my portfolio at the higher level." While this might be risky, it will show how much they legitimately want you to do the work for them. Downsizing/downscaling your skills does nothing to boost your future opportunities, especially in consulting.

I would have an honest conversation with the person you would report to. If they know the recruiter is doing this and allowing it would you really want to work for them?
