What is going on?

What is going on?

I have been searching for a job since November and the response rate has been abysmal. I am a senior level employee and while I understand these roles aren't just hanging on trees, I typically have managed to get a decent amount of interest. It is very, very quiet. Yes, my linkedin and resume are stellar and I'm networking like crazy. I can't even pick up consulting work right now. Can anyone share any insights? I'd really appreciate it!!

It may have to do with the market in the present moment, rather than you.

I have been there I know the feeling. Practice some self care. Write down what you are looking for. Or what skills you want to use from your experience in your next role.

Same here, I started job search since 2 years ago, still have not landed anything, its very very quiet .. my friend told me there are a lot of senior executives on the market due to the mass layoffs in the last 2 years, everyone is looking for a same level job, do you see the same dynamic?

    That's a good point....

I think we are all experiencing the exact same scenario. The market is frozen right now. So while the media and government is reporting great job numbers, these numbers do not reflect the reality that many have exhausted their unemployment benefits and are not accounted for. Further, many who have accepted jobs are far under-employed just to feed their families.

So you are not alone. This is the worst I have ever seen in my 40 years of working.

OP here-yes, I've been feeling like did a new Covid strain come back??? No forward movement whatsoever except a few companies who are interested in hiring me, but for a fraction of my salary. While I am flexible, I cannot go back to working for what I made 20 years ago.

Same. I am in tech and after past layoffs have been 'picked up' within a month. This job search round has been brutal.

It's been rough. I've re-vamped my resume about 6 times. I kept changing and adjusting my title too. I've picked up a few new skills and I've just now started seeing some results.

Try to stay positive. If you are feeling burnt out focus on your mental health, rest, do something that makes you happy and try again later. It really does make a difference!

OP here-thank you for reminding me of this. Self care has not been at the top of my list because I'm so stressed about getting back to work.

    It's a tough job market.
I have been out of a job for over 1 year. I have an excellent work history, and superb references. I know I'm not the only one going through this, but of course, it's discouraging. I read yesterday that it now take 6-8 months to land a new role for upper managements roles. Good luck.

I just wanted to write in support. I have been looking for 6 months now and have had little movement. I am also a Sr. level employee and struggling to get past first interviews. I am surprised and also wondering if I am experiencing ageism in hiring for the first time in my life. I am with u in solidarity. Keep at it, as I am!

In the same boat. What I also wonder about, is that in the past I was getting more calls from recruiters. Now - nothing. Not many jobs where I could use networking too. Is it because there is just very little turnover at this level? Getting discouraged.

160 applications, in 5 weeks hours and hours spent. 12 interviews and 35+ hours a week driving around dropping off information to companies I was really interested in. Ironically the only interviews and one offer were from the places I made an effort to walk into. A lot lower pay but I wasn’t going to take my measly savings at this time to zero. It comes with a better title than I’ve ever had as an Administrator but 5.00 less than my last job hourly and no Commision. So I’m starting over at square one. Will keep adding the new skills as I obtain them to a rebuilt resume and in time will try for something higher paying. It was a wild hunt to say the least and I’m on my second week employed so it’s all still new and scary.

I don't think the OP is crying about anything. She's asking if others are experiencing the same thing. Please try to be helpful.

How are you supporting yourself not working for 2 years? Some of us don't have the luxury of a spouse or family funding our lives. A lot of us are on our own.

Years when there is definite or possible uncertainty about the presidential administration always slows down the job market for the preceding months in my experience (yes I know some of these times coincided with economic recessions/slow downs too) but 1992, 2000, 2008, 2016 -I don’t find this surprising right now. I think the other thing we are seeing is the residual impact of companies that overhired and promoted talent during the Great Resignation. Lastly, 6-8 months is more typical of what it was like for a senior or unique roles pre-pandemic, unfortunately job seekers are no longer in the drivers seat as they were.
