Piece of "golden" HR advice that applies to everyone!

In my first HR role, I was told the golden rule was to document, document, document. This also applies to employees. Any conversation about raises/money, any conflicts, talks about promotions, essentially anything you deem important needs to be documented. Following up in-person conversations via email and saving emails/slack messages can save a lot of headache down the road. Trust me, HR is saving everything on their end. You need to be doing so too so it doesn't end up in a he said/she said type of situation. I've been involved in way too may instances of employees coming to me and saying so and so promised X and when I ask for any type of back up, nothing can be provided. In a perfect world, everyone would keep their word, work together and be kind but we know that's not true so make sure to cover your behind!

  1. Peace Out

I absolutely 100% agree with you.

  2. Anonymous

Agreed wholeheartedly. And this is also called CYA. When someone has challenged me or my knowledge in particular, I keep very organized files and can pull up any conversation. Not only that, anything HR related regarding requests for increases, or yearly reviews, goes to a home email file. Though I work in an environment where inappropriate comments are made by the leader, I'm not the only one witnessing it. Unfortunately, they don't get caught as they don't say these things in front of their higher ups. However, I'm on emails with a lot of folks and I always am professional. Make sure your email replies have absolutely no emotion in them, just keep it professional.
