Out and about after 5 weeks.....

Not to sure what to think about the day. I ventured out to grocery shop for the first time today in 5 weeks. Mask in tow and seeing the taped arrows on the floor AFTER being given the green light from the grocery store employee directing me to come in, get a cart, and proceed inside was surreal. I was disoriented and had to be intentional on the direction I was going while navigating my cart and trying to locate "where" things were....and be socially conscience about the 6ft distance. Standing in line waiting proved to be a reflection of the past 5 weeks in Pennsylvania and trying to figure out how I was going to get back to Georgia. (Depart from Philly to arrive to Atlanta airport or drive across many states?) How has your experience been navigating in the grocery store? Are you able to find the items that you had on your list?

I am usually focused when I go to the store as this task is not my favorite. However, in your case, take your time to complete your task. This is a new normal.

I’ve been going once or twice a week . With a new baby, it’s been hard to wait several days for pickup or delivery so I’ve had to just mask up and go. I try my best to have a paper list and system before I go.. The biggest challenges so far (besides not being able to find some items) has been the lane entry direction changes in Walmart and not being able to use coupons at self check out .. with the mask on, I’m not looking at the floor all the time and didn’t even notice it at first - which caused others to be hostile and make confrontational comments . It also adds time to the shop to have to go around to the other end of the store to enter an isle from that direction just to get one item..

Thank you so much and blessings to you and yours as well! I get it that people are on edge, but it’s just not worth it to engage.

I stocked up the freezer at the beginning of March. We do a pickup about once a week for canned goods, vegetables and dairy, and to keep the freezer restocked. I did venture in last week to pick up a prescription. What saddened me greatly is the number of people without masks...especially those with children who had no masks. I was over the moon that they had paper towels - and even my brand, as I was running low. And I was so excited to score a house brand spray cleaner that was anti-bacterial. Who knew that paper towels and spray cleaner could make me so happy!! Our world has changed. We must change with it, and apparently find the lemonade among the lemons!

jkepler.....TRUTH on the basic necessities that we tend to take for granted. I have Grands and my Daughter is high risk... I've been ordering food and having the delivery driver leave at the front door. I really appreciate your last statement.....it is really really a good statement to hold on to.

I'm a in NJ and I have been going out once a week, with my mask and disinfecting wipes in hand. I have seen some wonderful people helping each other out and I have seen to some total jerks. Some people are still acting like this is armageddon and hoarding. The stores are limiting the number of people allowed in and using every other cashier lane to help keep everyone apart. The first three weeks, a lot of the store shelves were bare, and not just cleaning items and paper goods. Luckily we do shop at Costco and Sams club and had stocked up on paper goods prior to the shutdown. My freezer and pantry were also stocked. I shop for myself and my parents, so they don't have to leave the house. We are lucky to have an awesome produce store near us that also sells bread, eggs and dairy products. A couple of weeks, that is the only store we had to go to, since I was picking up mostly perishables. What the stores run out of week to week seems to be so random. A couple of weeks ago, there was no chicken stock to be found in the store. Another week, there was no prepacked cheese, and the lines at the deli counter were huge and no one was using social distancing, so we went without cheese that week. At one point they were limiting chicken to 1 package per order. Now it's up to two. They are still limiting paper goods to one package and the are limiting eggs, bacon, butter and cleaning products. I am thankful for the UPS, FedEx and USPS employees who keep my supplies coming. We've ordered a lot from Amazon and Walmart for delivery of anything we can. I was starting to run out of some cleaning items, and had to settle for whatever brand was available. I crochet and have been working on projects to keep myself busy, so glad for yarn deliveries. LOL

Michelle Sisko, You we're definitely prepared and in a hot zone. The panic buying is real! It's probably to have a sense of control and not realizing that in the middle of that chaotic thinking, it's leaving others without....which in turn caused more unnecessary panic. I've been using online delivery for my Daughter and getting into a rythmn with the scheduled time that is offered. I love to weave....what types of things do you like to crochet?

I went to Costco yesterday. They had no pork, chicken and only ground beef. Most of the meat coolers were filled with Brats, salmon and berries. Last week when I went, they had a TON of pork, but no chicken. You never know what you're going to get when you go. It seems like each week there's a new "need to have" item for people and the stores run out.

The meat coolers filled with berries? WAOW!? This is certainly getting interesting for sure with the supply chain. I'm hopeful that with stores getting more on board with limiting the items, the stores will have a chance to stock up on inventory to replenish the shelves.

I have been having various stores deliver, I can’t always get everything from one place because they seem to run out. I did go to the store last week because I needed a few things that the delivery service did have and found it stocked and organized. They had made aisles one way so if you forgot something you had to go all the way around to get it, and you better not go the wrong way or you may get scolded.

I know I am in the minority. I live in rural US. I understand large cities being cautious; however, if you are never exposed to "outside invaders", your body never gets the chance to build immunity. I avoid big box stores and shop locally. I know the business owners and trust that they are doing everything to keep us safe. I only go shopping when absolutely necessary, but that hasn't changed because of COVID-19. I was raised to be prepared - freezer full of meat, shelves full of canned produce from the garden. Weekly shopping is mostly for perishables.

Diane, I was raised like you to be prepared and stock up wasn't negotiable. I can hear some of my older relatives saying, "best to be prepared!"

I do the exact same thing... my freezer was already loaded with meat from Costco and I had a lot of canned goods on hand, as well as paper products. It was nice to stay out of the TP frenzy, and I know I am lucky to afford to stock up in a way that many people cannot. Normal will come back; it will just be a different normal. I hope everyone stays safe and healthy, and we don’t forget the lessons we have learned.

Being in New York (eastern Long Island) we knew the shutdown was coming in mid-March and did a huge grocery shop to stock the freezer and pantry. It's the milk, eggs, fresh fruit & vegetables that we'll go out for. Try to get there within the first 1/2 hour of opening (by 7:30am), all masked up and on a mission ... get the items, pay, and out. So far so good. Probably have 3 weeks left in the freezer. It also helps that it's just 2 of us and husband is a firefighter and gone in 48 hour shifts. So we'll cook 2 meals and I'll just do leftovers for 2 days.
