Best advice for a stay-at-home mom looking to transition back into the workforce.

Best advice for a stay-at-home mom looking to transition back into the workforce. Seeking work but the 6-year gap on my resume isn't doing me any favors. Mid-30s and I'm starting from the bottom all over again, but with extra responsibilities this time. :)

Would love to go back to school and get a degree to help get past some of the HR checkboxes, but that's going to require a job to afford the tuition. I'm not trying to peddle a 'poor me' story, just looking for advice, please.

This may not be ideal or the type of position that you're looking for, but maybe the way to go is to seek out a position at Starbucks or Target, which provides tuition assistance or reimbursement to part-time and full-time employees. These large companies have positions where a gap in employment history may not be as much of a barrier as with other positions and provide the educational support you're looking for.

This is the path forward, excellent suggestion.

Another option is to apply for contractor or part time roles at companies, which may hire you on permanently. I'm not a mom but this is how I got the role I have now.

Look for companies that offer returnships.

If you're able to volunteer, that's a great way to gain new skills, fill the current gap, and meet new people who may provide a referral. Remember, 80% of jobs aren't advertised. So focus on those 3 points to help move forward.

Keep a list of 3 of what you achieved each week. Discuss with a friend. Make a timetable. With some challenges included which fit your other roles and responsibilities.
