Needing insight - dead end with this role?

Ive been through 3 interviews (HR screen, hiring manager, and then manager again with additional leadership) - followed by a lunch with the team I’d be working with. This was a week and a half ago.

I emailed recruiter a week after the lunch and he is apparently out of the office, and his back up contact never replied back after saying they would “check on it”. Recruiter should be back today or tomorrow.

After 3 interviews plus lunch, I - perhaps wrongly- assumed I was close to an offer.

Would the offer stage be held up because the recruiter is out or wouldn’t they have a back up handling that stuff? Not sure how HR teams handle these situations. The recruiter has always been the point of contact with the exception of brief thank you notes to manager. In fact, after the lunch he responded warmly to the TY note saying they enjoyed it and would be in touch soon with “next steps”.

I don’t know whether to assume this is dead or hold out hope. I’d really love this job - been wanting to get in there for a while.

Any insight is appreciated!!

The lunch is a positive step. If the recruiter being out caused a delay, its possible. Where i work now only has 1 recruiter. Even though her boss would full in, it isn't likely she'd take over offers.

Since she is close to returning please do keep us posted ?

It's not a done deal yet so I would keep up your search with this on the back burner. Keep moving.

I don’t know why people put all their eggs in one basket, just keep moving and applying for other jobs. It’s business not personal, there are myriad of reasons why they are not getting back to you even though you had a great meeting at lunch. Learn the cutoff game there isn’t much you can do and playing every scene isn’t going to help. Keep moving

Unkind and not a supportive response to the poster's inquiry.

Stop analyzing and keep on searching. It’s like dating

Did you get anyone else's contact info during the lunch? Reach out to the hiring manager and see if maybe they got busy or distracted and never got back to the recruiter.

Thank you. I do have the hiring manager’s contact info from brief communication (thank you notes) - since the in house recruiter has had ownership of the process all this time, I wasn’t sure if I should bypass that and go straight to him (?)

the wheels of hiring in a corporation can move slower than you think is even possible. It's usually not personal, it just takes forever to get anything done through the bureaucracy and waiting for internal 'stakeholders' to do what you need them to.

    "Patience, grasshopper."

Yes, wait until you hear back from the recruiter working on the position you're vying for. The other recruiter may just be overwhelmed with his/her own workload.

Simply put, the backup recruiter is the backup in name only. Probably figured he or she has enough to do without picking up the work of other people. I would wait until this coming MONDAY or TUESDAY before one reached any conclusions. The initial recruiter will probably have 2 days of work to catch up on before they start reaching out to job applicants etc.......

Man, I read some of these and realize how impatient some job seekers are. Just know it can take several weeks to make a decision and then still another month to start in a professional environment.

Don’t give up on it but don’t put all your eggs in one basket either.

My daughter just went through a very similar process that took almost 5 weeks.

Patience is a virtue. Some companies do this purposely to see how you handle yourself (i.e. do you remain patient, do you start calling/emailing daily, do you become frustrated, etc.). It shows them how you handle "pressure".

Why assume anything? What difference would it make?. They will either reach out or not.

In the meantime keep focused on other positions.

Often at the final point of interviewing they bring in the last final candidates (more than just you) to see how you mesh in a casual environment with the team.

It may take a while to cull all the feedback and get people's input. If you are up against other decisions perhaps email once again offer up your references in that email (though don't add them, just offer to share them) let them know this and otherwise give it one more week and see if they respond back.

If you don't hear back from the recruiter by the end of that week email the hiring manager directly and reinforce your interest and fit for the role and let them know they are your first choice in your search. If you are a finalist I assure you the HM will reply even if it is to put you on hold till they finalize things. Keep looking elsewhere if you are actively looking because until you have some commitment from them it's not over.
