What's your biggest career challenge?

What's your biggest career challenge?

My answer: For a quite a bit of my career I struggled with work/life balance. I threw myself into work (either because I liked it and it was impactful and it was just my work style). Took a huge mindset change a decade or two ago. from working harder to working smarter!

I'm a librarian with a subject specialty. Generalist librarians don't respect my specialty, and the top brass are generalists. I've been laid off 3 times. I am applying for generalist jobs, but I fear I'm being discounted because I'm a specialist. My profession has been in decline in terms of respect for a long time, but I can't go back to school for another professional-level paying career track.

A few things here...transferable skills are an asset, so it is always good to show that in your resume and in your interview. You may also want to look at roles that could utilize the same set of skills though not direct like maybe working in a museum or some kind of records office. And lastly, I would say in regard to school, that Certifications are highly regarded, so instead of going back to school, you could pursue a Certification in the new field or even just start to take on some training courses and be sure to add them to your resume. Hope this helps.

In this moment...my biggest career challenge is accepting compliments and being comfortable with success.
I don't like a lot of attention on me but lately, I've been working on feeling more comfortable with being in the spotlight. This includes me being more vocal about sharing out my wins (both big or small) because I've learned you can't expect people to be your cheerleader.

It's a mindset shift for sure but it's also about building up my professional confidence.
