Counterproductive as I see it!

Subcontractor here… an associate of mine – lets call him “Subcontractor B” was assigned a project that he is not able to complete and lacks the knowledge to complete. Subcontractor B is protected by the owner as he is a good friend of her boyfriend.

I initially worked on the project but the owner handed off to him since he “needed billable work”.

Subcontractor B cannot complete the project. Owner wants project completed so she is handing off the project to “Subcontractor C”. That is fine with me as I have enough project work to keep me busy.

Subcontractor B has scheduled calls with Subcontractor C to review the project… but he cannot answer the questions. Then Subcontractor B sends me an email to provide the information which he then feeds to Subcontractor C -not copying me..(it is all about giving Subcontractor B billable time)

This is counterproductive…. Why not include me in the calls… instead of the back and forth to obtain the required answers?

What are your thoughts? Should I leave it alone as I am billing for my time and getting paid to answer his questions… or should I bring up to the owner.

Keep answering the questions, draw the discussion out for plenty of followup and don't make things too quick and too easy for anyone. Copy owner, and both contractors in each of your replies if it serves you.

Thank you!... makes sense...I have not been copying the owner or the other subcontractor and typically I respond quickly. Will change that!

Yes exactly. You want passive credit and everyone to understand you are the source of all this great information. He will next try to gain his answers over text or the phone where there is far less chance for a paper trail or record of your contribution. It's important that you are viewed as the expert and a valuable source of information. Don't ever contribute without a paper trail. It's too easy for people to take credit for your contribution.

Why not next time just say you're really busy and if SubB's project needs your help, you will gladly do the work and bill your hours to his project.

You guys are Subs who are responsible for delivering your own work and should focus on that. He understands this and so just make it crystal clear that taking time away from your work means you must bill your hours to his project.

Thank you...yes I will bill my hours to his project... he is not capable of delivering and I agree I need to focus on my work.

Because they are using you and you’re allowing it. Say ‘no.’
