Hi there!
Great question! I think it can take anywhere from 3-6 months. There are several variables, i.e. already a field/industry/role within your wheelhouse vs if it is something new, how robust is the onboarding and training process, how collaborative is the new team, etc.
There are some steps you can take to assist you in this. Below are just a few to get you started;
Create a checklist for yourself on what you need to be successful (this is just for you as a guide, not to be shared with your employer).
Have a 30-60-90 day plan. This should include about 3 top goals for each milestone that you want to accomplish. Make sure your goals actually align with the business and business needs. i.e. you always wanted to learn a particular software system but you join a company that uses a different system...your new goal should be to learn the system the company is utilizing.
Start a resource list for yourself. This can be internal resource, external resources, links/websites, people, organizations that help you to be successful in your role. (This too is not necessarily meant to be shared but could be an asset later one when you find some go tos.)
Manage a project/task tracker of what you are working on and what's on your plate. It may not help you feel more comfortable per say but it sure can assist in feeling more confident about what all you have going which in turn could help your comfort level and your team's comfort level with you that you are on top of things.
Hope this helps.
