Question for all you HR/ hiring experts:

Question for all you HR/ hiring experts: In your experience, does requesting references( specific categories requested e.g. 2 colleague/client and 1 manager) after 6 interviews during a 3 month hiring process mean that the employer is using that still to narrow down last few candidates, or is that step usually reserved for the chosen candidate? I’m going a little nuts here!

In my experience, this is a tool used to rank the final candidates. Congratulations! Your made the final grouping.

It will vary by company. Where I am now, we don't do them. Where I was previously (for 10 years), we did not do them until after offer (trust me, lots and lots of back and forth on that one in our group, especially after when calling references for a few people, the feedback I received from the references was less than stellar but I lost that battle).

Concerned on the amount of interviews unless it's a Executive role. And, yes, I would view that as they have fantastic candidates and they're looking to learn what makes you stand out more than other candidates. Now in saying that, it is typically saved for a top candidate first, and then if there's still uncertainty they may compare to

It could be either, depends on the company. Some use it as a way to whittle down to the final person, and some use it as a checks-and-balances for the final candidate to make sure there aren't any misses/dealbreakers to be revealed. It's a good position to be in, either way. Good luck to you!
