How do I enter the data analytics field?

How do I enter the data analytics field? I have a degree in advertising and have a background in marketing and real estate. I'm currently finishing a certification in data analytics through Coursea. I'm in my late 30's. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

I completed the Google data certification too, I have not been able to shift yet, but the people I know who did it created a GitHub or website with all of their data projects and put that on the linkedin and on their resume. Joining some data networking groups seemed to help them too. My issue is not having the time to really search as right now I’m working a crazy demanding job, the economy sucks! But it’s still possible just have to keep pushing and developing your skill set mainly focus on advanced excel and SQL for entry level roles. As a recruiter I see those as the main skilled needed for early career data analyst.

I'd recommend putting together a portfolio of work, showing dashboards, visualizations, etc. Even if it is just result from classwork or something you 'made up' to show - vs. tell - your skills.

Lots of great advice here! To add, I would join other data analytics professional communities & groups. It's a great place to network, stay connected with the industry and as someone mentioned below, gaining a potential mentor or two. I also find these sorts of communities + groups are often free but even if they're paid, they sometimes have scholarships you can apply for.

I'd also say look into apprenticeships and search for "breaking into data analytics programs" that could help intro you to this field. Last thing, start going to workshops/events/meet ups in or around your area. If you can commit to at least 1 virtual event a month, who knows where that can take you!

The goal is just continue learning and putting yourself out there and in no time, you'll be on your way.
