Years of Experience vs. Experience in the Years?

Years of Experience vs. Experience in the Years?

One of my core strengths is my ability to learn quickly. Within a few years, I transitioned from being an economics teacher to an analytics manager through self-study, a journey I continue to pursue.

I’ve lived in 6 countries, traveled to over 40, and worked in 12 very different jobs. This diverse background has taught me how to quickly adapt to new environments. I taught myself to code and became proficient in Python, SQL, and PySpark. Currently, I manage a team of three data analysts at a Fortune 500 company. Despite having an undergrad in art, I earned a master's in economics and am now completing a data science master's at Georgia Tech.

I have 4 years of experience in analytics—2 as an analytics manager in Shanghai and 2 in the US. However, I’m facing challenges translating this experience into my CV, as senior analytics roles often require 5+ years of experience.

While I’m content in my current role, I feel I’m nearing its growth potential and have applied to hundreds of jobs without success. When I first moved back to the US, interviews came easily, but now, despite more experience, I’m finding it harder to get responses, which has been discouraging.

I’m seeking remote roles in analytics management or data science (with a goal to eventually become a CDO). Any advice on how to highlight my fast-learning ability in my CV and effectively navigate today’s job market?

With this varied experience, it is even more important to tailor each resume to the JD you are applying to. Reduce jobs in unrelated fields to a single bullet showing your job/role/title progression, and add bullets to those relevant to the JD. Ensure all bullets are quantified by how many and how long (e.g., rather than lead a development team, say managed a team of xx developers on a project that yy and completed in less than zz months. Include if it was completed early and under budget.)
