Drug Testing & Approved Medical marijuana card

Drug Testing & Approved Medical marijuana card

I have a question regarding required drug testing for a new position and having an approved medical marijuana card from my state. Medical marijuana is approved in my state and I’m approved for breast cancer treatment. I’ve not used in several months but I see the company does hair test for all positions so I might test positive for THC use but it can be explained, is documented, etc. should I disclose this before the test or after if they inquire about results? This is such a grey area.

edit to add IT project manager in Virginia (non government)

So my understanding of how the process works - should a drug screen come back positive, the MRO (medical review officer with the screening company i.e. Quest, Labcorp, etc.) will then reach out to you at which point you would share this information and provide the documentation then they would make a determination. If the hiring company did not include the services of a MRO with their drug screening contract, they are the ones making that determination.

All that to say, it's typically appreciated when a candidate shares this information up front. On the flip side, I can understand why you wouldn't want to as it would be disclosing health information you may not necessarily want to share.

AFAIK, there is no reason to disclose WHY you take a med.

Anything like amphetamines (Adderall/Ritalin/etc) will be presumed to be to ADHD or narcolepsy if you have a prescription, but marijuana has many, many uses. I would NOT disclose cancer. They would think about potentially too much time off, insurance rates, and so on. An oncologist being the prescriber would tip them off, but they may not look beyond the card being valid.

If it's still illegal on the federal level, does that affect the job? That often depends on the specific employer.

Thank you. I had a rough understanding, but not complete understanding of the process.

Thanks for the detailed replies. This makes sense and will proceed with caution to not disclose private details.

I also have an MMJ card and am worried about this. The way I have handled this is to make sure that I don't apply to jobs that involve driving or any handling of equipment that impairment would be problematic. Even with an MMJ authorization, most states can still charge you with a DUI if you are under the influence, so keep that in mind. While you don't need to disclose to the company, you can disclose to the testing company that there is potential in the hair sample due to the medical use of marijuana under a state-sanctioned card and assure them you got your product from an authorized dispensary.

My situation is different because I have seizures that limit my ability to drive. I'm not sure why they are doing such a comprehensive drug test on you but know that DUI laws can apply to marijuana and prescription (or other legal/illegal) drugs, not just alcohol.

Thanks for sharing. This role is for IT project manager for an insurance company so no driving, physical tasks at all. My treatment has concluded about 6 months ago. I’ve read it can show positive for over 6 months in hair tests.

I don't think I would disclose this up front. If it comes back, you can always provide proof of your prescription. If it becomes an issue, you should have the opportunty to appeal.

If you're in the US, depending on which state you're in, in can be illegal for them to not hire you if you test positive with a prescription - I believe PA is that way, not sure about other states.

You don't say what you do - that may also have bearing on this - for example, if you might be getting a company vehicle.

Drug testing and an approved medical marijuana card can play an important role in health management, especially for men with low testosterone. Oral testosterone treatment can help restore hormone balance, improving energy and mood. With proper guidance and testing, these treatments can be a safer, more effective way to address low testosterone, supporting overall wellness without unnecessary risks. https://www.rethinktestosterone.com/blog/drugs-that-affect-testosterone

I had my doubts about ordering seeds online, especially being in Missouri where local suppliers are still figuring things out. But this spring, I decided to take the plunge and start my own indoor grow. After some serious browsing, I landed on Kind Seed Co - https://kindseed.com/usa/marijuana-seeds-missouri/ . What caught my attention was their insane variety — over a thousand strains, and their Bruce Banner 2.0 Photo Fem had great reviews. Ordering was easy, and I was impressed with how quickly the seeds arrived. The packaging was discreet and professional. Germination went better than expected — 5 out of 5 sprouted within three days. The plants are now thriving under a full spectrum LED, and I can already see the potential yield. If you’re in Missouri and looking to kickstart your own grow legally, I’d absolutely recommend checking out Kind Seed Co. They really know what they’re doing, and their seeds are top-tier.
