Do you have any experience with non-profits as an employee or volunteer? That is where to start. Depending on what else you do, you may be one who could sit on the board of one. I started my journey by joining the board of a non-profit LGBT choir I was a member of (note: Federal laws require that board members of non-profits are volunteer positions, so you will have to attend the board meetings and possibly sit on committees, but you can't get paid for it.) I am considering starting my own and have just finished a doctorate program in human services, so I have researched the process and requirements for my state.
Also check out non-profit grant and foundation sites like CANDID which has some resources. They have tools and resources for building the business plan. You must also incorporate or establish an LLC to obtain your non-profit status. It cannot be done overnight, as there is much to consider, and a significant amount of paperwork and possible legal fees upfront.
