Eight interviews, then radio silence?

Eight interviews, then radio silence?

I had eight interviews with six people (two on two different subject areas), for a job I thought I was a great fit for. I have two very specific types of experience that are central to the position, and each alone is hard to find in a candidate. I was told I was one of two candidates to be brought into the office--and then told that they were busy and I'd hear back "in a couple of weeks." In the meantime, another exciting opportunity surfaced, and I sent an email to the first hiring manager to let them know, in the interest of transparency. Nine minutes later, I got a "thank you for the update email"--and then crickets.

Should I assume they have moved on to someone else?

Yes, unfortunately, I think you should move on. Even if they have not filled the position, the fact that they are taking so long to make a decision means that there is something amiss. No one wants to work in a position where decisions are slow on critical hires and their commitment to you is questionable.

I don't like to assume anything. I would follow up with a friendly phone call and tell them how excited you are about the role and why you would like to be interviewed!

You've been transparent, they've been silent. They may have found someone else, but they also may be terrible at communicating, which a red flag. Either way, you have your answer.

I am going through this right now as well. In fact, I just had a good cry in the shower and decided to move on. Focus on the other opportunity and put the 'eight interview' one out of your mind. If it comes through, you will be pleasantly surprised. Or, at least that is what I just told myself in the shower. :( Or wait, do all that after you fully acknowledge this sucks and no way to treat humans in general.

Yes, no reason to reach back out. If they revisit the hiring scenario, great. If not you didn't invest anymore time.

Good luck with your 2nd prospect.

P.s. transparency in a job search is not necessary. It seldom has the desire affect.

Nine minutes is not much time to deliberate - and it might have been less than that if they were systematically going through email.

Additionally, their approval loop could take a while - i.e. "a couple of weeks", which is not unusual if this is a larger company.

For sure, though, I would pursue the other opportunity. It is an enviable situation to have two great alternatives to chose from. If the situations both materialize, you have bargaining power; if not, hopefully one of them will come through and be a good fit. If both don't come through, something better may be waiting. I have had that happen also before. Wishing you all of the best!

Eight interviews and they cant pull it together to even let you know where they’re at in the process?
I mean, their interview process seems already excessive….overkill actually. They also seem to have either a lot of red tape or major difficulty making decisions overall.
