Applied for Job, No Interview

Applied for Job, No Interview

So, I am a bit bummed today. I applied for a job at a college and I thought I truly met all the qualifications. I had the right degree, the right amount of educational content experience, and the right availability. To make it worse, I am even a fairly recent alumni of their program.

Well, it is has been three weeks now and I didn't even get an interview. All that I have gotten so far is the robo-email saying they are "excited" I applied.

I plan on following up one time to see if my application slipped through the cracks, but this one stung a bit.

Dang, it is a tough market out there!

(And ps, this was for a 1099 part-time job!)

They may think you are over qualified. Don’t be discouraged. Keep applying & aim higher. You deserve more..not less!

It is very common to interview many times within Higher Ed before landing in the right spot. Took me a year and a half. And trust me, I have tons of experience, perfect fit in so many ways, but I couldn't either land an interview, or I didn't get offers. Until one day my current job opened and you know what, it was a much better fit than any of the jobs I interviewed. So just know, state jobs move slower than corporate jobs. Also, I'm an alum too. Don't fret, give yourself a moment to reflect, take a few hours off from searching, then get back to it the next day. I found this helped my sanity as each day held new hope for me. Set up job alerts too. Or look at other colleges around you, or even other schools or departments at the same place of higher ed. It's a great place to work and much safer than Corporate and much better benefits. Keep us posted and good luck!

I have worked in higher ed for 30+ years, with 24.5 years at a public university. I have served on many search committees, even for part-time positions. The common process for hiring committees was to first read through the resumes and determine who was eligible for the job by educational background and/or work experience. Then the committee would have to rank the applicants to determine who would be interviewed. The next step in the process was to get the list of potential interviewees vetted and approved by HR. Then the interviewees would be called/emailed to get interviews set up. Sometimes this could take a month just to get the list of people who we wanted to interview approved. The wheels of a state-owned university move very slowly. Please be patient.

If you do not get interviewed, remind yourself that there may have been an internal candidate or two who was likely to get the job over an outside applicant.
