So I saw a LinkedIn feel good post that says among other things that no one will remember how many hours you worked.

False. People do but not in a positive way. It’s more along the lines of how you were a corporate martyr. How you were a fool not taking vacations in service of a company that would have no compunction laying you off with no notice or advance warning whereas you were expected to give at least two weeks notice.

Take that vacation. Remember your inbox will never be empty.

I'm not the OP here, but in my experience, there's a lot of truth to this. The people who give their all are often taken advantage of or are more often rewarded with more work before more compensation, while others with well-defined boundaries get what they ask for or what they deserve, depending on your perspective. By having well-defined boundaries (work-life balance, saying no to additional or unrelated tasks), one signals that one knows one's worth, which results in better treatment. Remember, we teach people how to treat us by how we carry ourselves.

lol. No one hurt me but my friend asked for two weeks off and everyone freaked out. He was the controller and he told them that the company had been around for 80 years and that it would survive two weeks without him

    And it did.

Remember they can change the policy at any time without notice & you will lose all banked PTO. It happened at my company 2 years ago. 70 years & then boom no more PTO balances. For some folks they lost 6 months extra pay they were counting on when they retired.

Cannot agree with this enough. You work to live not live to work. But don’t be a snarky jerk about it.
