I resigned from my job in health ins after 7 years for a job more aligned with my masters degree in healthcare administration and my ongoing passion of working in gerontology. (I have volunteered over the years in Alzheimer’s and dementia and have found it very fulfilling). Unfortunately, I was fired from my new job due to my excessive drinking; I had unknowingly slipped onto the super-highway of alcoholism. After being clean for 3 years now, I choose to still actively receive weekly counseling. I also survived an intervention (which I despised in the moment but I’m grateful for now). I fear the damage I have done to my body, esp my cognition and memory, are forever negatively affected. I want to return to working, but my doctors, specialists, and therapists all collectively have independently stated I’m not in a position where work is possible. My continual spiraling downward in fogginess, lack of focus and follow through and concentration are mediocre at best. I have applied for disability 3 times now, but have been denied, despite having a lawyer. I’ve been living with extended family for the past 4 years. Is there any type of ‘reset button’ you would recommend? I fear the damage I’ve done is irreversible.

Have you reached out to your state’s ’Department of Vocational Rehabilitation’ office? They may be able to assist you in finding employment with reasonable accommodation.

    I’ll look into it. Thanks!

The fact that you are able to write so clearly and articulately seems promising and would indicate to me that you are a lot more able than you are believing. Are you on some type of medication that’s making you powerless and insecure? You’ve overcome a great deal and seem to still carry shame about it. That can be debilitating on its own. It seems that with the amount of therapy you are getting this would be something you would be working on. Check out cognitive therapy for yourself to get over the fear re your perceived limits. I think you’re rather extraordinary and brave.

I sincerely thank you for your honest feedback. You’ve encouraged me by sharing to look deeper, not simply go with appearances.

Here is a thought, its okay to get a second opinion, even from therapists. We all are human and maybe they cant see the growth. Also you might not get as much brain fog if it is active and engaged. You might not be at the level of job that you once had ~ but something with a lot less stress. Build up to where you were with better coping skills.

    Good Luck!

Your input is appreciated. I agree, a position with less time constraints and a lower stress level would be optimal. Coping skills are essential.

The below suggestions are great. Another suggestion, as a starting point, is to start with volenteering again. Sometimes the saying, when I got busy, I got better, is true. This can also assist with things such as an updated reference.

Getting sober is tough work. I congratulate you on 3 years! You can do this, one day at a time.

Coach Nancie, your words bring me comfort and hope. Thank you for taking time to share your suggestion. I will add this to my memory bank: when I got busy, I got better.
