Switching Industries - Career Advice

Hi Everyone!

I’m interested in transitioning back to the communications/public relations industry, but I’m not exactly sure how to do it. I have about 2 years of related communications experience about 6-7 years ago, but then switched to HR, and now I’m in recruitment. I’ve been applying to positions that don’t require years of experience, but I’m not sure if there’s anything else I can do to increase my chances. I appreciate any advice!

Thank you!

While you can highlight any communication experience you have done in your HR role, unfortunately you may have to start in a lower-level position again. Similar to other fields, the world of PR/Communications continues to evolve, and organizations look for current, relevant experience. Possibly target small, independent agencies who need people with at least a base level of knowledge that would allow you to ramp up quickly to learn any new skills.

That’s what I kind of figured. I’ll definitely try and look into smaller independent agencies though. I appreciate the advice!
