I'm getting about 3-5 sales per month on etsy right now but its not my primary income.

That's extremely disappointing to hear and will result in both artists and consumers looking elsewhere to find the beautiful niche treasures you create. The last thing we want it to spend time sifting through the same run of the mill, mass produced items we can find on literally every other website out there now. It's the most tragic when greed supersedes the human experience. The only people benefiting from these changes are those profiting from it.

Etsy’s main customers seem to be the artists themselves! The seller fees, the commissions paid to them on each sale, the pricing pressure caused by a “race to the bottom”, etc. the site is designed to maximize the return on investment for Etsy shareholders, not artists. You’re not a business owner if you sell on Etsy. You’re an independent contractor who’s competing against much cheaper products from China. It’s a lose-lose situation.

I think it’s much easier to sell to customers in person. That way, you can more easily sell to them. With your own signup list, they can become your customer that YOU can market to, not only Etsy.
