I'm in my mid-30s and have been in my career field in investment operations for 10 years, and I am interested in learning more about consulting .

My career has been 8 years at a very small company that gave me lots of in-depth experience in many facets of my field and 2 at a large company that has the capacity to have employees doing very specific tasks and less of the "big picture". My current position at the large company is remote. I was brought on during a time when the department was in development and preparing to go live. I encountered many contract employees brought in from consulting companies to help get everything up and running, and it was really my first experience with consulting because I honestly didn't really know what that even was before then.

After interacting with many of them, I have decided that I would really like to set my career path up to eventually work for a consulting company because I feel it would utilize my broad knowledge of all operational processes. I just have no idea how to really get into that. 10 years isn't a long time in a field in the grand scheme of things, and I am not looking to leave my company now because I just got a promotion and have plans to work my way into a more senior position. However, when/if I decide to branch out, how would I go about marketing myself to these consulting companies when I have no real experience doing that kind of work? Also, I have no idea how to even FIND these companies. I know of 2 only because those are where our contract employees were from.

You need to network with consultants working for big consulting firms. Do some research and also attend their conferences.
