Advice:

I would like to gain some knowledge in economics and basic finance but do not want to go back to school full time. I work and have a demanding job, but would like to carve time for online education in this area. Any recommendations on learning paths from reputable public institutions that I could look at? I am open to a postgrad certificate, diploma, 2nd degree (I have a bachelors) or even a certificate program. I am in Canada but open to schools in other places (dependent on $ of course)...

thanks for the advice!

Instead of going for a full degree program I suggest you take some of the video courses available on line. Some are free. There was this one called master classes if I remember and jt had lectures from the best schools and professors in all subjects. Also there was this one teacher who offered video instruction on just about everything! Everyone at my job who had kids was using his videos they were terrific. I do remember he had some on basics of finance etc.

i have a degree in economics and unless this is a major passion of yours, don’t put yourself through getting a degree in it. Even getting an economics for dummies would really be adequate. From that you can decide what Econ areas you want to pursue. Now with finance it’s the same thing. There’s some pretty good introductory books like pocket MBA , and some pretty good videos on financial analysis which can be fun! Again don’t put yourself into formal programs when the basics can be learned and you can decide what you want to pursue. You didn’t mention investing but I imagine this is what you also want to do learn. Read Warren Buffets books until you get some fundamental understanding of financial foundations. His philosophy is simple , clear and will keep you from crazy scams and losing money. I’m a finance Econ nerd by the way. I love this stuff and hope your interests get sparked. Once you learn how things work it’s fun watching these companies rise and seeing how they impact the world , also understanding the economic failures, like what happened in 2008, also learning to watch and understand trends. It’s my thing!! So go get the basics free online and stay away from scammers and have fun!

Check your local community college or purchase subscriptions to finance newspaper and magazines such as The Wall Street Journal or Investors Business Daily all have publications and offer special reports on stock analysis, retirement funds, etc...

I've heard about a platform called sophia where you can get courses that 'can' be transferred for college credit.

Notice the hint 'can' be transferred. You'll have to call the college of your interest to see if the sophia courses transfer over fully.
