Hello everyone.

Hello everyone.

I am currently working in a kitchen and have some questions.

First is it usually normal to listen to the chefs with no way to communicate if something might be wrong. I find no matter how many times I speak up it's just listen, even though I might be right or there is a problem.

Second is it normal in kitchen work to find coverage for sick days and also come in sick. I mean it's a kitchen and almost all my co-workers beside me don't call in sick they just come in.

Third, what's with the work yourself to death mentality. if you're not working as hard as you physically can you aren't, good enough to be here. This mentality is just something I will never understand.

It sounds like the restaurant you work in isn't run very well. Staff should be able to alert the chef if there is a problem or a special dietary need. The board of health would be interested to know that people who are ill are preparing food; usually there are regulations against it, especially if it's any kind of "stomach virus." The restaurant won't stay open long if it starts an epidemic!

    Completely normal.
