I'm a manager of a team of 10 people.

I'm a manager ofa team of 10 people. My team works on system enhancements & support issues. My boss recently stated that my team isn't getting work done unless she calls for a meeting. I have tried tactfully to tell her that the only problem requests are hers. She doesn't give clear requirements, doesn't understand the system, is constantly changing her scope & everything is the highest priority. When we are waiting on her for items, she never responds. Then she says that we need to keep reaching out to her. She is driving me crazy. She micromanages at times. It's getting so painful that I'm thinking of quitting. Any ideas on how to make this better?

As a manager, you also have to manage up. Instead of waiting for your supervisor to call an impromptu meeting that disrupts the team and stresses everyone out, consider scheduling a weekly touch point with her to review requirements, answer her questions, give informal training, etc. This way, you control the narrative, flow of information and timing of meetings. Treat her like a client, documenting issues, risks, action items, etc. Report status out to her every Friday. If she is smart, she will catch on and may behave better. Regardless, you will be in control. I hope that this helps. Good luck.

Definitely, document meeting minutes or follow up every meeting with an email that documents meetings outcomes. By tracking items to closure and other artifacts, you will be documenting her actions, or lack thereof, AND the whole team will be informed and will be able to advocate for you if it comes to that.

Do you use a project management system?
