I recently got a job with a company that hasn’t given raises in 20 years and their salaries are already frightfully low. I don’t see it changing anytime soon, but I also fear my age will be detrimental in finding a new position, no matter what other skills or talents I possess. I’d love to hear any suggestions for what I should do. I’m pretty smart, eternally curious, quick to pick up on new skills and enjoy people. Thank you!

I would start some sort of side hustle. Since there is no way this current job will be compensated any more than it is now. So make the most of your time to invest in you. Create a second revenue stream and start looking for a new job. Do not take ageism for granted. There are many of us in our 60s and 70s being offered jobs.

Do you job well, and look for a new one. Don’t let your age stop you from trying. If you don’t look you will be stuck. And no raises in 20 years? What keeps people there?

Fear and apathy keep most people there. Younger staffers leave after a year. It’s sad.

I was hired at my current job as Sr. Executive Asst in a c-suite at 64 yrs of age.

Previously 10 yr position at a different facility at 53 yrs of age.
Your resume and your appearance matter! I am skilled and love my job. They reward experience.
Dress appropriately and even if you don't dye your hair, ensure your style is not frumpy or old lady like.
Wear some flattering make up. You don't have to share your age. They all think I am 10 years younger than my age! Your energy and positivity also go a long way. You've got this!

Have you checked the state laws regarding raises? It may be dependent upon # of employees etc but cost of living alone should be accounted for in some way?

I could also be talking out my behind - but its what came to mind
