I've participated in a variety of them over the years at different employers. It's always been fun.

I love it. It's the rare opportunity to really interact with my team and have some fun

It's a lot of fun and a fun way to celebrate the holidays with co-workers. We set a limit though of only a $10 gift. There are so many things you can get for that. We all go out and our employer pays for our evening out. It's only about 2 hours, and we start about 3 and are done by 5. This allows those with kiddos or families to get home at their regular time.

I’m not being shady I really want to know what you can get as a gift for $10 other that a gift card or lottery tickets

I think they are fun. They aren't expensive and it's nice to get and give stocking stuffer gifts

If you know your coworkers well, I think these can be fun. I've participated in many, and been responsible for creating a few of my own during the over 21 years I've been at my job.

If you don't people on the other hand, it can be super stressful.

Either way, I believe there should always be 3 rules in place:
    1) It should always be optional. 2) There should be a cap on the amount of the gift. 3) If there are people in the group who don't know each other, or know each other well - hold off on silly gifts.

I think there have to be limits on steals. If the same gift keeps getting stolen or the same person keeps getting stolen from (both have happened to me) then this stops being any fun.

This was new to me until I was about 30. It only works if folks know each other or are up for the activity. If you're on the outside, it's not fun. Personally, I've never found them to be inclusive. Forced community is tough.

During COVID, when one company I worked at went remote, we found an online company where it was a white elephant/ bingo /trivia game where each round had a prize that was a gift swap option. The company paid for it. The employees participated. Interesting twist.

This day in age, I think it's best for companies/departments to survey/ask around ahead of time to gauge the pulse of the team.

If your company is having a gift exchange, get the terms up front (optional? $ max amount? type of gifts, and how long is the exchange---some people don't like the aggressiveness of the game portion)

I love it!! I get very excited giving gifts and completing at the white elephant. Lots of chances for humor and bonding. But that’s me.

They can be fun, but at the same time, when there are a few gifts everyone wants and most of the gifts are not that popular and everyone keeps stealing the few that are, that isn't fun.

I also have been in the position of having too many gifts stolen from me at those gift exchanges and wondering what the heck I'm going to end up with. It usually turned out to be something I didn't want.

    I think it's fun!!

I liked it the first year ok. It was my first Christmas so I joined in. I k ew the person. I was assigned fairly well so it was fun. This year, I don’t know the person at all. She works in our sister office. I’m sort of wished I’d opted out now.

I loathe things like that, and never participate.

If you want to give a gift, be the secret Santa to a charitable organization . Your colleagues can buy their own gifts.

Not to be bahumbug, I hate those things.

We used Elfster this year, and you can opt in or not. It's an online site that allows for teams that are scattered throughout the states to have a secret santa and has websites attached to it. It's pretty fun. I think people do what that feel and no shade. My team is coast to coast.

  17. Carolina Ventura

I personally don't like it due to people giving out the weirdest presents.

Warning long story about the one and only time I have ever participated in a gift exchange.

A little background to this story first. HR, Accounting, and Purchasing departments suggest a secret Santa luncheon. Anyone who wanted to participate could and if not it was ok. There was a $20 spending limit and since it was a luncheon we would need to pay lunch prior. My best friend works in HR and we both requested that we receive someone else to exchange with as we celebrate Christmas together. This is an important detail to keep in mind while reading my story, best friend and I know everything about each other likes, dislikes, music, etc. in fact if one of us is gone for the day and the other goes to our lunch spots we are immediately asked where are partner in crime is. Finally, I was a single mom to four children at the time.

    Now onto the story…

Dec. 1st everyone who wants to participate signs up, pays lunch fee, and draws name. I was super excited after I drew my BFF’s bosses name and couldn’t wait to shop. The luncheon would take place on Dec. 18th. Every time I went to a store I looked for anything that I could add to her gift basket that I was putting together for her. When I was getting her basket put together I was amazed by how many little things that made up her basket and was getting so excited to see her open it.

Dec. 18th arrived and my BFF and I rode together to celebrate with our colleagues. We get to the venue and sit down with all of our colleagues, chatting with each other, and asking what the others were doing for the holidays. Small talk while waiting for our lunches to arrive. Lunch is served and we eat while still chatting with each other. It was a really great lunch with friends. Dishes are cleared and all the beautifully wrapped presents are now brought out to the center of the table. It was an oval table so we started with one end going around and the person whose turn it was their present was given to them to unwrap. Once they unwrapped the gift it went on to the next person and so on so forth. After all gifts had been unwrapped and we all ewwwed and awwwwd over them, we went around the circle and tried to guess who our secret Santa was and if you didn’t know your secret Santa was, they would tell you. I was seated right next to my BFF and we were towards the middle. One by one our colleagues opened these beautifully wrapped gifts and I am amazed at the thoughtfulness that has been put into these gifts. I’m talking homemade wine rack, gift baskets with everything under the sun, and just all around great gifts. That is until my BFF opens her amazing gift and it’s my turn. I stare down at the beautifully wrapped box, barely containing my excitement, and didn’t want to rip the beautiful paper. Once unwrapped I opened the white box and inside was red and green tissue paper which I carefully unwrapped to find, drum roll please, a $25 gift card to a canned food outlet. Yep, if you’re wondering what look was on my face, well let’s just say it was a cross between being constipated, trying to keep it in, and just full out bawling. I composed myself and said thank you to whoever was my secret Santa and that it would come in very handy. Meanwhile in my head I had secretly killed them 10 times. I look at all of my colleagues to see that most had the same dazed look on their face and trying not to feel sorry for me. They knew it was a shit gift and didn’t want to embarrass me at all. I put the gift card back in the box, placed the folded tissue and wrapping paper inside the box, and sat it in front of me. There were three people left who got really great and thoughtful gifts. Now all the gifts have been opened and now time to find out who gave us our gifts. When it got to me all eyes were on me, I had no clue who gave me my very thoughtless gift and was in complete shock when it was an HR person who sits right next to none other than my BFF. This person could have at any point asked my BFF to get ideas on things that I would like. She did not and her reasoning behind her gift was because I could use it on my kids being a single mother. Then she boasts about how much she went over the limit by putting $25 on it. At that comment I wanted to take the gift card and throw it in her face but I didn’t and again thanked her profusely and told her it would come in very handy. On the inside I was spitting nails and my BFF saw it. She pulled her boss aside and told her that we would be about a half an hour late getting back from lunch because she needed to get me calmed down cuz there was definitely a storm a brewing.

As we walked back to my car it was so silent and something new for the both of us as we are always laughing and talking.

We get in my car and I turn it on. As it is warming up I looked over at her and said “what the hell was the gift I just received?” I asked her if that’s all people saw me as, the single mother with four kids that needs help. She asked me to calm down and at that point I break down crying. She asked me to look at it as a gift that could be used and that was all that mattered.

She didn’t know why this woman didn’t ask her what my likes were. I told her I was thankful and asked if she could tell how pissed I was though. She told me that she saw smoke coming out my ears but didn’t think anyone else saw. I told her it was not about the gift at all it was the fact that last night she realized she hadn’t bought a gift for me and had stopped at this particular grocery store, spotted the gift card on the way out and decided that she would get it and to make it a sweeter gift she would get the $25 gift card. So basically I was an after thought for her.

Although I was livid at the time and thought that I would get over it quickly, it took me several years to get over it and now is an inside joke between my BFF and I. Christmas time rolls around and you can hear one us mention that one year I got a $25 gift card for the grocery outlet. Doesn’t hurt nearly as much now because we laugh about it.

OP here- let me first say I’m amazed that people went so much over the $20 limit- the reality is in this day and age if you literally are only spending $20 it’s going to be a small gift which isn’t bad. I will say if I had been that person I probably would’ve spent $25 and felt bad that everyone else went over the limit so much. I refused one year at my old job- one person actually asked me if I participated I said no. She asked why not I said I didn’t have enough time to get the gift and she said you could’ve asked for more time. I don’t know how I got out of that but I do remember not telling the truth which was if I have a coworker I want to get something for I will and if I don’t I could use that $25 for something I want. I’ve literally never done secret Santa. I’m sorry you’re gift was thoughless

Your story sounded like you got a gift card to a food pantry. Or was it a grocery store? I'd be excited to get a gift like that. Work people truly are not your friends that really know you. But sometimes there are angels among us that give us things we didn't know we needed. I hope you put the card to good use. No one knows on the inside how you felt, but you. It was your insecurity that rang out how unhappy the card made you, but honestly, regardless of what your needs were then, did it help or did it hurt? If it wasn't needed, always consider paying it forward. I rarely get anything useful regarding work gifts except gift cards which are always a hot item and stolen in our gift exchange game. I ended up with a nice candle and happily forwarded on to someone who would appreciate it. I don't think the person meant you any harm, but I do think you received it as harm. I always get gifts that are not so useful, and not always for me, so I re-gift and so do most people I know.

I am likely the exception. I actually enjoy it, as a team bonding experience!
