I have been with the same organization for 13 years, working in various roles such as Marketing Manager, Director of Customer Experience, and Account Management. I have working remotely for the past 11 years. I have been looking for a new job for months with no success. I did make it to the final round of interviews for one company, but in the end they said they thought I would thrive on a larger team (the one I would have been on was only a few people).

I really want to get out of the field of Customer Care, or at least the customer-facing side of things. I'm an excellent manager, and I thrive on helping my team/ staff grow and succeed. Unfortunately, my current boss (the company President) only sees me as one of the team, even though I have a Director role. I have all of the responsibility with the same low pay and an obscene lack of respect. The only reason I haven't left yet, aside from not finding something else first is because the company pays most of my health insurance and I have a matching 401k. That being said, I am still absolutely miserable each day when I sit down at my computer.

When searching for a new job, I am unsure of what titles I should be focusing on. This may seem like a silly question, but because I have been in the same company for so long, I am not familiar with the latest buzz words or titles that would fit my experience and needs.

I am considering consulting a recruiter for advice, but also wanted to ask for the thoughts from my community here. TIA!

Hello! First of all, I commend your longevity.

You've listed multiple talents that you have - highlight those in your future job search versus the industry in which you've worked. Marketing, Directing, and Account Management are viable skillsets - regardless of where these skills were focused.

If you feel a recruiter can help direct you, this may be a great option. Or look at sites such as LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and Indeed.com.

    All the best!

Thank you!! I appreciate your validation and advice. I feel like I've been underground all this time and just poking my head out to see what is going on (if that makes any sense). :)

I’ve been here before! You are not alone. Your talents and drive for more seem to be overlooked by your current manager. My recommendations are to search on LinkedIn for a resume writer to enhance your resume and help update your LinkedIn profile with keywords to improve your job search. The resume writers can provide their background and pricing. You decide who to go with. Another recommendation is to review jobs for the roles you want to navigate into, apply, and during interviews, mention what parts of those roles excite you the most to learn and execute in your next position. Advise how your past work experience can benefit those roles. Hope this helps! :)

Thank you! Deciding on a role is my roadblock right now. I do see job listings that really excite me and seem like something I could do, but I hesitate to apply. Also, I have been underpaid and underutilized for so long that when I see a salary that is quite a bit higher than my current one, it actually makes me nervous. I appreciate you taking the time to give me advice!

I totally understand. I would still apply to those intriguing jobs and get any questions you have about the role out during the interview processes to make sure you make the best long-term decision for yourself. Also, don’t settle for the same pay…You will regret it and you are skilled. :)
