Has the job market for accounting professionals slowed down?

I'm not sure if the market is over saturated with accounting professionals or if hiring managers are looking for the perfect candidate that has every skill set that matches the job description or if you've been out of work for a few months they won't even consider you.

Over the last few months, I've applied to numerous jobs, both perm and contract but nothing materializes. I've had a couple of interviews but the only feedback I get is that they've decided to go in another direction. It's very frustrating. I feel the longer I'm out of work the longer it will take me to find another job. I've been working in accounting for over 12 years. Any advice?

The job market across the board has slowed way down.

It's not just you! As a previous commenter said, the job market is slow across the board.

Perhaps you could look into virtual career fairs or other events tailored to your industry to meet recruiters...network, network, network.

You could also look into being a freelance accountant for small business owners! Just a thought to start a side hustle until you land something full-time to your liking.

Don't give up though! Keep going.

I can't speak to accounting specifically, but I can say that many "white collar" professions are slow to hire right now. With so many companies doing layoffs and reducing their hiring plans, it makes sense that accounting would also be impacted. I do think accountants are still generally in demand; it may just take longer to find something than it would have in the past.

The white collar recession is still strong-regardless of the field. Hang in there!

I think every discipline is suffering at the moment. There are plenty of jobs out there but it's a combination of longer times for interviews, unclear expectations from hiring managers, and companies not having inside recruiting teams to vet you properly, or a glut of applications. Use your network to find roles, reach out to people directly you cannot just apply. In the interim take temp work if you can and keep your skills up to date with some online courses or additional skills training in areas where you don't have expertise and learn new tools. Use the forums from the tech things you know to tout your experience and find connections there too. Don't give up, it's 6-9 months these days to find a new job.
